- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The original period features, particularly the cornicing and our fireplaces. The building is a traditional Edinburgh tenement built in 1900 with lovely high ceilings and a fantastic view of Arthur's Seat. Our home is small but cosy, we don't have huge amounts of space but we are right next to Holyrood Park and just a short walk from the city centre.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Like most people, storage is our main issue. We have had to think about using the height of the rooms to our advantage and we operate a 'one in, one out' system, particularly with regard to toys! We try not to buy things unless we love them and know for sure we have somewhere to put/display/store them.

Wow! 515 Square feet with a nursery...well done!
The storage cabinets in the nursery look like card catalogs--and as a librarian, I'm loving it!
I LOVE those office chairs! Very nice place!
This whole place is great, but what really got my vote was the adorable nursery!
This place is perfect, it has my vote. This is the best so far.
Love the windows, built-ins and the adorable fire places.
Being from the UK I can particularly appreciate the lack of storage - closets are few and far between here!
You guys got it goin' on! This is how you make a small place look great, and functional at the same time.
This is one of my favorites so far! what is the paint color in the bedroom?
brilliant! love the closed and open storage in the kitchen the most!!
Wow, it seems so much larger than 515 sq ft! Beautiful job!
Yay. It's so nice to see UK entries that aren't London. Gorgeous place you have and that nursery is so sweet, lucky girl she is.
I love that this place is lovely and stylish without looking like you tried too hard . . . (and that its appeal lies in how it is decorated, rather than in the architecture of the place . . )
Beautiful! Such thoughtful use of space throughout the house - especially in the kitchen with the open shelving. Truly an amazing space.
This is great!
I love all the little compartments there are to open and explore in that nursery-- brilliant!
I really like the color scheme. It's cool yet the dashes of wood (the office chairs in particular) warm it up. I also think your kitchen is funky, but I think you guys did a great job with it. I personally wouldn't even know how to deal with my sink sunken in like that; but I'm weird.
Very cute place.
I'm drooooooling over your furniture! So many stunning pieces!
Nice space. I really like your kitchen set-up.
You had me at the chairs. Hope I can find something alike in the USA.
Lovely to see a Scottish home included! Love the colour of your bedroom and the fact you haven't try to hide/cover the fireplace there. Also your nursery is beautiful. The storage is practical and stylish too. Only teeny weeny negative would be that I'm not a fan your telly above the fireplace but that is just personal preference. Hope you do well!
love it and would be very interested to know the maker of the office chairs!
I literally love every room.
Where do the office chairs come from?
Ditto on the great office chairs. Where did they come from? Gorgeous! Your space looks really spacious and totally livable and you achieved the effect in 515 sq ft! Bravo!
Great bones to work with and all your additions perfect! Love the nursery too.
Wow! I'm amazed. 2 bedrooms, office area, living area, a small dining area, and kitchen all in 515 square feet!!! you managed to fit everything you need without looking like you made compromises. THe spaces look beautiful spacious and comfortable at the same time. Where do you keep your clothes and other essentials. You do not seem to have adequate storage.
Another vote for the office chairs cum living room overflow seating!! gorgeous.
Can someone please identify a source? or are they vintage?
Agreed that this is just perfect.
your baby will grow up to be a librarian. Or a professor :)
The living room is awesome. Love the desk chairs.
Love it! So well thought out. Best of luck to you and I hope you make it to the finals.
Beautiful, charming home! I, too, am in love with the desk chairs. I am also wildly curious about the framed map of England in your kitchen and the Union Jack thingy (cutting board?) in the lower left corner of the photo. Could you tell me more about them and where you got them?
LOVE. The nursery also got my vote. As a librarian that card catalog storage is AWESOME. Love the living room too.
Lovely space you've created for your family. I absolutely adore it.
OMG...this is the neatest little house! Look at the little baby robe on the hook next to the parents...so stinkin' cute! I love everything about this space!!
Morag, greetings from your neighbor down at The Shore overlooking the Water of Leith. This is such a clever and beautiful home on so many levels. You've managed to pull off the lounge-cum-dining room-cum-office without the room appearing crowded (nice Edinburgh press, by the way). I can't believe that three people live here and hope that AT will have you for a home tour after the contest ends.
My goodness, so neat and organised!
Wow, thank you AT for featuring us and thank you for all the lovely comments!
The office chairs are from Dwell - http://dwell.co.uk/105838/Curved-padded-office-chair-walnut-and-white/. We have bought quite a few bits and pieces from there, including the dining table and chairs.
FELTTIPJR - That was our thinking too, they easily swing round and provide extra seating when we have people round.
Shazzad - To be honest I kind of feel the same about the TV but it used to sit in front of the Edinburgh Press (where the Barcelona chair is now) and it just took up a lot of floor space. I'm not crazy about the way it looks above the fireplace but from a practical point of view it is much better.
Little Lulu - We have a fairly big cupboard in the hall which we have fitted out with shelves and rails and my husband and I have our clothes in there. We also have a chest of drawers in the bedroom which isn't shown in the photo of that room. We have a few things stored under the sofa and the cot but yes, storage is definitely an issue, particularly now that we have a baby (although we try to be very strict about what baby 'stuff' we actually need).
Peggybelle - the map print is by Bold & Noble - http://boldandnoble.com/collections/type-maps
The Union Jack worktop saver is by Joseph Joseph (http://www.josephjoseph.com/) although they don't seem to stock it any more. We bought it at John Lewis.
Rossini19 - Hello! The Shore is a lovely place to live. We love the Edinburgh Press too, they are so useful.
Sorry, I can't seem to make those links work...
Perfection, Waverly/Morag. I so agree with Danilv above who commended you for the relaxed, unselfconscious & effortless stylishness of this place.
And that charming nursery! Very clever use of the old card catalogue cabinet or whatever it once was to organize all the tiny bits & pieces & toys necessary to keep a baby both happy and tidy.
I LOVE LOVE this! I'd live there is a second. The bedroom is so simple and elegant and peaceful - and your nursery rocks.
Lovely to see Scotland featured, what a beautiful home!
really love the smart layout and functionality and the charm of the nursery is wonderful.
