You know we can't resist a good-looking and inexpensive way to store books. Forward-facing is the way to go when displaying books for little ones, especially pre-readers. For those of you who missed it the first time, there is a simple and affordable way to get these little bookshelves for your very own.
Get thee to IKEA and go to the kitchen area. That's right, Louise of Table Tonic created this mini library using the IKEA Bekvam spice racks. She was inspired by Lillian of Domestic Simplicity. And when we say inexpensive, we really mean it. Each shelf is just $3.99. We love the reading area with the wall of shelves and leather poufs. To see whether Louise is keeping the shelves their natural wood color or painting them, check out her blog Table Tonic.

White Enamel Flatwa...
the problem with these is that the kids won't be able to actually reach half their books.
I just used this idea to build a little reading nook for my 18 month old. They work and look great!! Here's a link to my blog where you can see them in action.

Also, the vast majority of the USA does not have IKEA.
Such a good idea - wish I had seen this earlier since I just made a book nook for my son with the Ribba shelves from Ikea.
Good idea, too bad the same rack is 6.99 at Ikea in Canada.
How does the kid get the books higher than her? This is pretty but not practical at all... my 16 month old has her books in bins on the floor so she can pull them out and read them all day long and put them back whenever she wants.
I just put in three of these this past weekend in a row horizontally for my almost-two-year-old. I almost bought the ribba ledges, but they are more expensive, and it is easier for little ones to put them away with the spice racks. Super easy and awesome!
I am looking forward to getting to IKEA to buy these spice racks! Despite the fact that they are $6.99 here in Canada. It's still a good price. I am always amazed at how critical folks are in their comments... the images posted are usually just demonstrate an idea, product or a decorating style. Clearly this book display is for an older child, she can easily reach that third tier of books, and will likely stand on her pouf to reach the forth. Cheers to a great idea!
I'm also surprised at how critical people can be on here. If you like the idea but your child is younger or shorter, then just put the shelves lower. I don't understand how people can't figure that out themselves.
My husband and I have been brainstorming ideas for displaying books and this seems like a really good solution. We'll probably wait till our daughter is at least a year old, though.
I LOVE this idea. However, I am nowhere near an IKEA and they don't sell them online. Any ideas on where I find something similar online?
Not being critical, just trying to figure out how the kid reaches the books at the top ;)
I think it's a great idea, especially for older children who can simply use a step stool to reach the higher ones. I think I'll put one right next to my daughter's bed to hold her nighttime books. :)
second the request for a non-IKEA source for us country heathens
Looks like the link to the "first time" this product was mentioned is broken.
this is gorgeous, and given that most parents actually sit and read to their children the height of the top shelves is TOTALLY fine. Geez it looks fab!
If your kid can read, he/she can probably figure out to get a chair if he wants to read something that's high up. If they can't read, you can rotate the books because unless you pick it out, they are just looking at pictures.
Very creative!
This idea is brilliant. That is why I love this site! I have been pricing forward-facing bookshelves and they can be pretty pricey. This solution definitely agrees with my budget!
We've been trying to find forward facing bookshelves (or come up with a creative DIY) for the last couple days! Our guy's books ALL come out while he's trying to pick one b/c he can't see the cover to know what the book is - this is fantastic!
If you really want to complain about having a non-Ikea source, you can always just do the footwork yourself. And I agree with the ridiculousness of the "too out of reach" complaints. You install it yourself, just put it lower. It doesn't have to look exactly like the photos.
This is for /inspiration/ - a simple, creative thought process is required.
