We looked for a good long time for sconces that were simple, modern and yet had a little deco in their DNA so that they wouldn't clash with our old bathroom (take note Joey! here's your answer). The answer to this mix of styles was the Motiv Sine Sconce, a sort of updated classic approach that we've see at Waterworks, Baker (new collections) and Anne Sacks. All of these three are still working with the concept of a classic New York style.
But, on to the sconces. We found the Motiv's through Simon's Harware, but also saw them at New York Replacement Parts. They come with handblown glass shades in polished chrome or satin nickel and run from $90 up to about $125, depending on where you look. Here's the google link.

Those are quite handsome.
I was wondering - is there a material difference between nickel and chrome in a bathroom setting? Is one longer lasting, or does it relate more to finish?

it's a difference in finish. i believe nowadays both of those options are plated onto stainless steel. which is as it should be, as stainless steel is noncorrosive, long-lasting, etc.
I just put up the Motiv glass shelves in my bathroom. Besides that they're big enough to actually put folded towels on, their mounting brackets are very sturdy and the price is reasonable for the very good quality. (Search the net for discounts.) It's kind of too bad that, now that they're on the wall, you can't pick up the hardward and feel how heavy it is.

Jonathan: I'm not sure about what material lasts longer etc. However, I've recently been looking at various fixtures and accoutrements for my bathroom, and I've been told that "polished chrome" is the only thing that looks the same no matter who the manufacturer is. Apparently, nickel and other metals can have many different finishes -- which affects the appearance significantly. So, because I plan to get fixtures from a few different manufacturers, I've been advised to stick with polished chrome to be sure that all the metal bits in my bathroom are harmonious with each other.
I have been looking all over for a sconce for my bedroom and I think that might be it!
Except the other fixtures in my room are bronze...any suggestions?
Nickel finish has a slight yellow-ish tint vs. chrome which is a bit more blue. I believe that the plater that I've used plates chrome over a base coat of nickel.
Motiv is a nice line of fixtures. They carry them at Great Indoors here in LA.

We were looking for something much as you described. Modern with a touch of deco. We actually came across the one you have shown here. Ultimately we changed our mind and chose to go with a flea market find ceiling chandelier, but up until then, we were debating between the two I will show here...
