When I wrote about my goal of packing a box a day in preparation for my upcoming move, a commenter mentioned the inefficiency of this system, considering I'd have to gather together tape, scissors, etc, every time I wanted to pack a box. Never fear! I have a survival kit.
Using one of my old reliable licorice boxes from my previous job at a candy shop, I've put together a simple but ridiculously helpful kit: my beloved chartreuse tape, old scissors for cutting the tape, a black sharpie for labeling boxes, a regular pen because you always need a pen and I'll go crazy if I have to keep searching for a pen, and measuring tape (I'm not sure what that's for yet, but it seemed handy). All of these items are ALWAYS in this box, unless they're in my hand. I've been packing steadily for weeks now, in stolen moments after long days at work, and this system has served me well. I've yet to lose any of the items in the box, and it's the one part of the moving process that actually relaxes me: whatever else happens, the survival kit won't let me down. Also, keeping a little bit of candy in the kit can help immensely.
Do you have a secret for keeping all your essentials wrangled while packing up your home?
