I love a project that looks like it cost a million bucks but actually comes in at far, far less. In Mrs. DeVore's case, she took a few simple and inexpensive pieces and put them together to create a desk that looks high end…
When her mother brought her a large piece of glass that was headed to the trash heap, Mrs. DeVore suddenly remembered the IKEA sawhorses she had picked up for $5 each. She could have just plopped the glass on the sawhorses and called it a day ... but Mrs. DeVore wanted a more polished look.

With a little gold spray paint on the sawhorses, Mrs. DeVore was able to create a new desk that looks much more expensive than the $10 it took to create it. Pairing the desk with a couple of gold accessories contributes to the luxe look — as does the zebra print wallpaper on the Mac.

I'm a little wary of that glass; not just any glass is going to be well-suited to desk duty, and that one looks a little thin, and perhaps not tempered.
I think it's beautiful! It makes the space seem more open and airy.
I agree with weatherman - this looks nice but I'm not sure about the functionality of glass that has not been tempered.
I love the look but had a hard time telling the difference between the two. Maybe its my computer.
@ladyearl0803-The gold probably looks MUCH better in person. I thought it was simply stained/varnished at first. Tempered or not, an optical mouse won't work on glass. Does Mrs. DeVore's iMac not have/need a mouse? Is there a mouse & pad in that lovely lavender urn?
I like the desk itself, but everything else... I can't believe only 1 person here has mentioned the urn (which would look much better over by the lamp).
It is best for glass to be 3/8"Thick and tempered.
This "fancy sawhorse desk!" project has popped up at least 3 times on AT since I've been here....
"With a little gold spray paint on the sawhorses, Mrs. DeVore was able to create a new desk that looks much more expensive than the $10 it took to create it."
Um, no.
totally awesome desk! LOVE the gold!
Very nice, but I think it is totally wrong to say that it was a $10 project. That would make pretty much everything a budget project as long as you already have the stuff.
A glass piece like that is quite costly, even at IKEA, and the cost of the desk was definitely more than $10.
Nope, sorry... it may look nice but it does not look high-end. The sawhorses are easily recognisable as IKEA items, and when someone is trying to conceal the IKEA-ness of something you just know it didn't cost that much.
I agree with Anna Europe. It's crafty, but let's not pretend it's something it isn't.
Actually I think the desk looks higher end than it is, partly because of the gold, and partly because of the whole setting. I could make that look trashy and cheap in five minutes; good for Mrs. DeVore that she can be tidy and knows where to stash all her papers, never mind her flash drives and coffee cups.
It's $10 for the sawhorses. The cost of the glass and spray paint is unknown.
It's a nifty idea--why wreck the post by trying to make this into a $10 DIY idea when it clearly isn't?
It's not just AT that does this--all the budget DIY projects seem to involve bits of "leftover" wood or paint or fabric or whatever that all clearly cost money at some point. Why not be honest and say what a project really costs, if you don't happen to have relatives who give you things or a storehouse of leftover craft supplies?
If it's a good project, it's a good project. The cost doesn't matter. If the only thing special about the project is an artificially low cost, then maybe reconsider posting it.
Allow me to break from the commentariat and commend you on choosing to paint the legs. Even if the desk does not cost exactly $10 it's good to know that this is an option. I think it would be interesting to see them painted silver, white, black or even red. The good thing about unifinished legs is that they do not need to be sanded and primed. :)
Not my style, exactly, but the photo looks nice. My own working style -- I often must refer to open books or papers spread out on the desk as I work -- I would install a hanging lamp (also called a swag lamp) to give a little more desktop room.
You know, there's gold spray paint that works on a stage set and then there's gold spray paint that looks good when you're inches away from it.
I'd love to see a post on various brands and colors of metallic spray paints with recommendations.
I'm truly curious if the untempered glass is actually a concern. I know nothing of glass. Or is it just kind of a "it would be better if" scenario versus real danger?
@ArchDarling - untempered glass is very much a real danger. Untempered glass is not nearly as strong and should not be used to support anything. If it breaks, it will break in a much more hazardous manner than tempered glass and increases the risk of injury.
Thanks, Pi.
The concept and idea are wonderful. I am not a professional designer, so I cannot comment on placement or design. What I can say is that this desk inspires my own creativity and desire to make something beautiful. Is that not a at least part of what design is all about?
I don't follow this website regularly, so is it possible that this is a place where criticism is welcome and integrity are put aside? If not, please consider the feelings of the artist, and for heaven's sake be kind with your comments.

I once had a desk with a glass top. It looked great, but it wasn't functional because no computer mouse would work on it. I guess that's not a problem here because her computer apparently doesn't have a mouse.
Good grief! I've never read such a bunch of picky comments in one place! Tempered glass? "Real" cost? Blabbing about not having a mouse pad? Please! I think the desk is a great and looks beautiful for a fraction of what ANY desk would cost!
I swear some of theses comments are insane! That desk looks great!
It seems like everytime I end up commenting its to comment about how insanely negative AT's commentors are! I get not everyone likes everything but sometimes a desk is a desk & I think this looks great and I love when people are able to come up with things by chance like this!
