Since we're focusing on cozying up in our bedrooms this month on Apartment Therapy, I thought it would be fitting to share the transition of my bedroom. This renovation, along with the rest of the house, began on August 7th, minutes after I closed on the house.
Once a living room, this bedroom hadn't been updated since the 70's. As most people who take on these projects, I thought the room had great potential — it's spacious, has great light, and all of the wainscoting and dentil molding was custom built by the grandfather of the previous owner.
For this post, I am only showing one side of the bedroom because the other side hasn't yet been decorated. My vision for this room is to make it feminine, calm, and luxurious. One of my biggest inspirations is Paris and when I wake up in the morning, I want to feel like I'm there.
But let's start from the beginning.
The foundation of this room includes new paint: Martha Stewart's French Ivory in semi-gloss for the trim, and Martha Stewart's Pressed Rose in eggshell for the walls. The woodwork took hours of sanding before and in between all three coats of paint. Ripping out the carpet took 20 minutes. It's removing the nailed-in carpet tacks along the perimeter that is more time consuming. A pry bar is your best friend for this.
I originally wanted pre-finished birch flooring but went with pre-finished natural white oak because it was less expensive and harder (so it is less prone to denting). (You can research the hardness of various wood species here.) I found this flooring at Uncle Hilde's Lumber Outlet for $2.95 a square foot. Oak doesn't get any less expensive and having it pre-finished is less mess in your home. The double hung window was also replaced with a triple pane argon gas vinyl window from Harvey Industries and is manufactured locally in Londonderry, New Hampshire.
The first thing I did when I moved in was sort through all of my stuff to find everything that had a Parisian feel. When you have to tackle an entire house, it's easiest to sort and group.
For now, I am using my old standby WILMA curtains covered by an antique table cloth to add depth. I bought inexpensive, white cotton linens from HomeGoods (even though I really want this, minus the monograms). Curtains, furniture, and more art are also on the list and in time I will get there!

Nomade Express Slee...
I think it looks terrific. I normally never like anything in the pink/lilac/rose range but the paint color looks fresh and bright and surprisingly modern in your space
Very nice start! Do tell, where did you purchase the mirror that is behind the chair in the last picture?
Awesome!
I think you owe it to your grandmother's antique tablecloth to turn it into a real curtain and hang it properly.
Can't wait to see the rest!
It looks beautiful already! It's like a vintage fairyland. I love it.
Not to be a nudge, but the molding is dentil, rather than dental.
Gtaffy, the mirror is from here:

You made a pink bedroom look feminine not girly. I'm very impressed. I love it. The colors, light and textures are a perfect balance. I can imagine wearing some luxurious lingerie and eating bon bons... perhaps not on the white bed!
Looks beautiful! Love that little yellow side table, where is it from? thanks!
For some reason, your bed looks so much better on the diagonal. Please keep it there, it looks amazing!
It's just wonderful!
Gorgeous! Such a difference! Where did you get that FAB rug??!
Beautiful!
Your room is beautiful! I have been wanting a rug just like that for my home–where, oh where did you get it?
Thank you! The rug is from HomeGoods (last year!)
The yellow side table is indeed a find! I'm jealous & I want one.
Cute room -
- but that bedside lamp in pix 8 & 9 desperately needs either a shorter harp or a larger shade...
"Where did you get that FAB rug?"
Flokati rugs are available all over the place these days - just Google.
love it!! this is a perfect example of something I'd never pick myself (not my style), but I think it looks just stunning! (and I also love that yellow side table!)
Yeah, where'd you get the rug?? It's kinda awesome. :)
lovely job on the room, very sweet.
Lovely! I could definitely handle waking up to that every morning- well done.
I'm particularly struck by how perfect that yellow table is with the rosy walls. It's unexpected, but the yellow keeps the room lively.
Oh, oops, thanks for the rug answers--for some reason they didn't show before I posted...
Romantic without being fussy--I'm inspired.
Beautiful!! So beautiful
I like the yellow a lot
Hmmm. "Locally in Londonderry..." I'm in Nashua, where are you, if I might ask? (I suspect we might hit the same Home Goods stores!) Your wainscotting is gorgeous, no wonder you bought the place! I hate pink, but I must say, you use it well! Nice job!
Hi Again! I found the yellow table on the street in Boston years ago. It was red then. I stripped it and painted it. SherryBin, I am in Manchester!
It cracks me up when people use the word "drama" to describe furnishings.
That being said, I think your room is just lovely.
DROOLING
So girly and fun! I love the nightstand-scape, just love everything about it. I also love the rug and that cutout curtain.
Nice work!
Your bed is gorgeous! Can I also ask where that's from?
Hi Susie, the bed is from the Concord Antique Gallery in Concord: http://concordantiquegallery.com/
OMG, Tanya is from my ABSOLUTE favorite House Tour ever! And you've moved! See her previous pad, it is so inspiring. Tanya, you have the greatest taste, thank you so much for sharing your home with us!

It's fun (and very revealing) to see the interiors of the AT staff.
But if a "Guy Room" featured those antlers, and a fur rug, there'd be all kinds of chaos erupting.
It is very romantic. Nicely done.
Lovely! J'adore your bed!
I'm with thorndale. Love the room - your even taste overcomes my dislike of pink and fuzzy rugs - but I don't love the diagonal bed. The yellow table and the curvy chair are fantastic.
So gorgeous. I love that the tiny details come together and add up to Parisian Art Nouveau. The feathers, shell color, brass edged mirror... and the florals on the tablecloth/curtain are straight out of a Mucha.
I like your room a lot! I also love the of white linens, but as the mother of five dogs who love to hang out on the bed with me, they're a no-go for my home.
I really like your room! Would love a bigger place so that I can do a "pink" room. Is your bed a double?
YAY my favorite poster got a new house! I can't wait to see more. Thank you for existing!
I love that little black metal table with the lighted vase on it. Where did it come from? Looks kind of like a plant stand. Really cool idea for the fairy lights, too.
Love!
Are those fairy lights in a jar?
Yesterday I sewed myself a ruffle-edged quilt cover. It was super easy, using my overlocker ot make a ruffled edge, but you can do it by hand, too. I love it a LOT, and it's not something I could afford ready made. It would be simple enough to make a small ruffle like the ones in the photos and attach it to ready-made pillow cases. Or even to by a lace ruffle and sew it on - or take it to a crafty friend or a tailor.
I'm not sure how you'd make that dramatic bed ruffle for the top of teh bed, though - I LOVE it but I admit to being a bit confused as to what it IS. It it just a cover over the actual quilt? Or is that the quilt itself?
please explain the lights in the jar. i can't tell because the picture is too small. it looks fantastic.
Hi! The lights in a jar is simply a large glass vase filled with white on white Christmas lights!
Love the pink!
I'm redoing my room and want pink on the walls too!
Did I miss the paint color or didn't anybody ask before i did!!
If so please tell me!
THANKS,
Suzanne
This is a great makeover, I love everything!
The only thing I would have done differently is either go for a hotter pink or maybe a mint green.
@ Suzanne - somewhere up in the original post she said the color was Martha Stewart's Pressed Rose. HTH!
