Type of space: Front yard
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: This is still a work in progress. After months of convincing, my green-thumbed landlord (aka my mom) finally allowed me to "organize" a section of my front yard. She is into the "jungle look", while I am more into the modern, well put together look. We had to come up with a common ground, and I think we accomplished it by creating a more usable area, with raised bed veggie and herb gardens. What I like most about the area is that hopefully we will be able to enjoy the fresh food when they grow and that people walking by make comments about how nice it looks now.
How did you create it? The designated area was filled with random plants, all over grown and sort of sparse. We first cleared the area, except for certain plants that did not get the "Ok" to go. We also left the bamboo that runs along the front fence, because it does provide some privacy. I bought the redwood used to make the raised beds from home depot and they cut it for me right there, free of charge. I didn't really have a solid game plan as to making the boxes, I just sort of nailed them in rectangle shapes and eye-balled the dimensions. I am saving up for some cement pavers to put down, the gravel will go between the pavers. Eventually, I would like to have some sort of simple gazebo over the whole thing to create an outdoor seating area.
Recommended store, site, product or resource? A lot of the inspiration was from flickr.com and simply google images. The wood and soil is home depot and the seeds are from Marina Garden Center in Marina Del Rey.
