My Green Resolution: Hi there! We're Daniel and Valeria from Hindsvik Shop here to share our Green Resolution with you! There are a number of ways which we have been striving to live a more eco-concious or sustainable lifestyle since we bought our home together a little over 4 years ago. We both really enjoy making new dishes and cooking our own meals but it wasn't until two years ago that we decided to start our own organic garden in the back yard…
Our little garden although healthy and flourishing with life just isn't quite large enough to produce nearly as much as we would like. So this year, our green resolution is expanding our garden to grow more of our own local and organic produce.
Many of the fruits and vegetables in our local grocery stores are imported from abroad, genetically modified and treated with pesticides. We've really been trying to make an effort to support local farmers in the area however living in a small town, it's been increasingly hard to find locally grown organic produce. The only locally organically grown produce requires us to drive out of town which isn't very green considering all of the emissions our vehicle lets off during the 60 minute commute - not to mention the extra cost of purchasing the goods. A few years ago we started a very small organic garden in the back yard with amazing results. This year we are planning on extending the garden three times the size and will be planting seasonal foods to make the most out of it!
There are a number of ways you can start eating organic and local foods too, no matter where you live. Growing fruits and vegetables both indoor and outdoors is an easy way. If you live in a large city, there may be communal city gardens where you grow your own food. There are also new and emerging businesses that will deliver local and organic produce from farms right to your door, or you can head straight to the farmers themselves! Another easy way of eating local and organic foods is supporting the stores and small businesses which stock these items.
Eating a little greener can go a long way to helping your health, and the health of the environment. Try it out! You won't be disappointed!
