My Green Resolution: As the year winds down and we ramp up for another I'm reminded just how time races by without stopping to consult me. There is no greater reminder of this than my children. To look at photos of them one year ago amazes me. Oftentimes after they go to bed and our home is quiet I'll spot their shoes out of the corner of my eye and wonder exactly when they got so big…
Something I'm trying to stay aware of is that as much as I wish it did, time doesn't slow down, which is why it's imperative I focus on making the most out of the time I do have, rather than dwelling on the fact that I don't have more of it. Same goes for money. Times are tight for me and many. This year I'm going to focus on stretching dollars rather than wishing I had more of them.
One way I can spend more quality time with my kids and the outdoors is to create an organic garden on the ranch where we live, right in between Los Angeles and San Francisco, on the Central Coast. Not only will this teach my kids the importance of where food comes from and how it gets from ground to their plate, but will undoubtedly save us money in the process. Sure, it's more effort than heading to the produce section of my grocery store or local farmer's market, but this method allows me to teach my kids about food while having fun with them, it gets us outside and our hands in dirt, it's good exercise, we get to soak up some Vitamin D and it's a good way to save money.
Last Fall I planted some organic arugula and shallots but My Green Resolution is to expand the garden so that we can rely on it more for our veggies and herbs this coming year.
