Melissa and Brent may have left their hearts in San Francisco, but they just brought the party to Raleigh with them! Melissa shares: My husband and I have had a love affair with San Francisco for years and lived out a dream by moving there in 2008. When we learned we were expecting in 2009, we looked forward to raising our daughter in the city. But shortly after she was born, we learned that due to a job transfer, we would have to move back to our hometown of Raleigh, NC when she was only 4 months old.
Before leaving San Francisco, we took her to as many landmarks and special spots in the city as possible. We wanted so badly to imprint on her the beauty of the place where she was created, where she grew in my belly, where she took her firsts breaths in the world. So often when she was tiny we would take her for car rides across the Golden Gate Bridge and whisper to her that it was her bridge and so now I have a hard time calling it anything but "Everly's bridge".
When it came to planning her first birthday party the theme was obvious - we wanted to take things back to where it all began and so my husband and I set to work making a list of places and experiences that represented the city. We decided on her party colors of Rose red, mustard yellow and gray as that was the color scheme on one of our favorite victorian houses in our old neighborhood. We set up a homemade Musee Mechanique photobooth as a nod to our favorite silly tourist attraction in the city. We hung a table cloth as a backdrop, added a sign & a table full of fun hats and silly props that people could use. A camera on a tripod with a remote allowed guests to take their own portraits.
And then we got to work planning the menu: We decided that all of the foods at her party would be reinterpretations from our favorites foods from different neighborhoods in San Francisco. Seafood chowder & sourdough bread for the Fisherman's wharf, burritos from the mission, eggrolls from chinatown, and sliders from one of our favorite restaurants in the Castro. Each dish featured a card with the neighborhood & the food listed so guests could learn what neighborhood they were eating from. The sweets table featured Everly's Bridge "Golden Gate Red Velvet" cupcakes and Ghiradelli square chocolate treats.
My husband created an awesome Golden Gate Bridge cut out and I hot glued doilies and origami paper to paper lanterns to hang as decorations. We also attached vintage SF postcards to string and draped them around the room.
We sent guests home with chinese takeout containers filled with sidewalk chalk as one of our favorite things to do in our old neighborhood was draw on the sidewalks in front of our building and leave chalk out for our neighbors to add to our designs.
Start to finish, it was an incredibly sweet day full of friends, family and memories of our beloved city. A fitting first year celebration for our darling girl, as she is certainly the best thing we ever found in San Francisco.
Thanks Melissa! Readers, you can see more of Everly's San Fran party on Melissa's blog Dear Baby.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Welcome back to Raleigh! This is where I live also. Your party was adorable! It's always nice to see girl parties that aren't pink.
wowwwwww. your story is EXACTLY our story with my son. except he was born in brooklyn new york, and we relocated when he was two months old back to california. now were in prague (moved here when he was 6 months old)-and your birthday party idea has totally inspired me as i cant wait to make it a special one!
That bridge is too cool!
that is fantastic. what a great idea, and memorable theme. way to go!
love the bridge! i am so dumb i thought the shadows on the wall was actually blue paint! duhh. but it looked nice anyway.
I went to your blog and saw your house and knew you must live in my neighborhood (Boylan Heights, right?)! Very cool party!
I love San Francisco too! It is my "city soulmate" and I just love what you have done for this bday party! I hope your daughter grows up to love SF as much as those of us who have left our hearts there!
Would you mind stencilling that Bridge and selling it on etsy so I can have one too??? That's great! What a fun party!
That party looks fantastic! I hate to be a jerk, but your daughter won't remember San Francisco... or this party. Your efforts are for you, and that's okay.
@st@cy, if you hate to be a jerk, then why be one?
Love the tablecloth - where's it from?
Very cool bridge! SF is always here for you. Maybe you will all get to return some day!
Really, st@cy . . . Why do anything for our kids before the age of 4- they won't remember. I think this is a sweet party and you have created wonderful family memories. Some day you can show Everly pictures and tell her stories about the wonderful time you had in San Francisco. Hope you get back there someday!
How creative! I love how you picked a city-theme and then found so many fun ways of expressing that theme - through color-schemes, fun food and actvities. The photobooth idea with fun hats and masks is brilliant! Looks like you all had a blast!
Welcome back to Raleigh! San Francisco is awesome, but Raleigh is a pretty rad place to grow up too!
Cute party, cute mommy and daddy but where's a pic of the birthday girl??!
I also think that any and all parties are GREAT for your child no matter what the age. Of course she won't remember, but children LOVE, absolutely love to see photos of themselves and hear about when they were babies and what mom and dad during that time etc..the more photos the better. My boys (ages 8 and 5) spend an hour at a time leafing thru photo albums and love to watch as our family photos create a collage on our MAC (screensaver.)
There's absolutely nothing wrong with a family having a party in the name of their child, or their dog or their new car. Parties are fun and get people out and socializing. That's what it's all about right?!
I love the party. I lived in San Francisco for a year about 4 years ago and I want to move back so bad. It's the best place ever, and I remember when I lived there thinking that it would be such a wonderful city to raise a family. I can imagine how crushed you must have been to have to leave. It's great that you are cherishing your memories! And you'll have to be sure to take Everly on plenty of vacations there!
Because people with names like @ClothDiaperFashionista tempt me to.
I want that bridge cut out too! I was hoping it was made out of metal and it was for sale somewhere!
We live in the city and with all our family here in and around the city, we won't be moving anytime soon. Come back and visit (and you know the best months to do that are in September and October!)
