My Party: Isla

Pensacola, FL

This rabbit isn't in a hurry; she's enjoying her first birthday party. Her mom Natalie describes: For my daughter's first birthday party I wanted something unique, fun, and girly. Something that would make for great photographs. I've always loved tea so I had the idea to do a mad hatter tea party and dubbed the event "Isla in ONEderland".This party was my inspiration. I am a single mom and my budget is tight so I knew I had to do it on the cheap. I contacted Parks and Recreation for permission to use my favorite park in the area (Aragon Park). I was surprised when they approved because the park is in a private, upscale neighborhood. And all it cost me was a little of my time and effort.

The paper lanterns I ordered online for a grand total of $18. I hung them over the table. The table coverings I got from a local party supply store for $10. And the teacups, pots, and saucers I picked up for pennies at Goodwill and garage sales. My dear friend Paula helped me paint the mismatched tea set with acrylic glass paint.

Because the majority of the guests still used sippy cups, I decided to fill the teacups with candy (wrapped in white tulle to illustrate steam from "tea") and give them as party favors. I also got a couple of white rabbit ear headbands for $1 each at Target.

I covered Isla's high chair in a purple crushed velvet fabric, like the chair where Ailce sits in the cartoon.
I made the cupcake stand from some round cake boards that I spray painted pink and gorilla glued to some interestingly shaped cups from Goodwill. I also made her blue dress out of a silk taffeta from Joanns.

I kept the food simple. Cupcakes from Walmart, brownies I baked, a fruit tray, a veggie tray, water, sweet tea, and soda. I made Isla's giant smash cupcake myself.

Aragon Park is equipped with an adorable playground. Instead of games we just let the kids run around and play.
