We're grateful Amy chose not to revisit her childhood birthday party and instead arranged this lovely one for her son Miller: Sadly, I only remember ever having one birthday party as a kid (New Kids on the Block themed, if you must know). So when it came time for my son's first birthday party, I knew I wanted to start birthday party celebrating traditions off big.
I am lucky enough to have in laws with a large home and a truly inviting swimming pool. So my husband and I batted our eyelashes, promised hours of playtime with the grandson, and (along with forty other party guests) invaded their house for a wonderful swim water themed first birthday party.
We were on a tight budget and because we were accommodating a large group of family and friends, we knew that many of the party decorations would need to be on the more wallet friendly side of things. (Hence, the red, white & blue color scheme for some post Fourth of July clearance decorations.) I took inspiration from Ohdeedoh, Sara's Party Perfect blog, Amy Atlas Events, and Pinterest boards and spent hours highlighting my favorite elements from so many great celebrations.
Once I felt confident enough, I started working on creating Miller's party to be just as beautifully detailed. I made about a hundred feet of flag banners with some painted and free hand cut paper grocery bags. I also had some of Miller's "best of" photos throughout his first year printed up, ribboned together, and hung on a wall above the food table.
The day (and Miller's first year!) flew by so fast, but we made sure to enjoy and photo document each moment.
