Lego's little brother Duplo is getting some love at Nikolay's party. His mom Joanne shares lots of clever ideas: My son loves his Duplos, so we took what is a common party theme (the Lego party) and adapted it to a younger demographic.

In my research I became a bit envious of the iconic "Lego minifig" which could be used in various ways while decorating for a Lego party, so I created my own version of that, combining two existing duplo blocks (a square with a single eye and an elongated oval with two eyes) to form a hybrid "duplo guy." This became the inspiration for many things, including the birthday cake.

I also used the recently-released alphabet and number blocks to create the invitation, "Happy Birthday" banner, and thank you cards. The invitation and thank you cards are simply our blocks, photographed. For the banner, I took stock photos of the blocks from Brick Link, vectorized them, and then printed them.

When I couldn't find a certain block paper at my local craft store, I re-created it and modified it for the party, and was able to use it for all manner of things, including name tags for the goodies, bottle wrappers, napkin rings, and table runners.

I was able to score a few large boxes of Duplos during the pre-Christmas sales, and decided to give one to each family, rather than a small bag of little items for each child. I think this worked out rather well.

Though we had planned a number of activities (build the Duplo creature, with Duplo eyes stickers; build a Duplo race car and race it down a ramp; guess how many Duplos are in a jar; coloring Duplo coloring pages printed from Lego.com; Duplo pinata; Lego Creationary for the older children and adults), most of that never took place because the children were having a grand time all on their own. It can be fun planning these sorts of things, but you have to go with the mood of the party, and in this case they turned out to be superfluous. The children did color, we did the guessing game, and the pinata was dutifully destroyed - everything else we can save for another day.

Thanks JoAnne! Readers, see more photos of Nikolay's fun party here.
