Who says a woodsy room can't be feminine (but not too feminine either!). Not Alison: Living in a tiny two-bedroom house near downtown Fort Worth, I knew I had my work cut out for me in making a creative space where my daughter could feel free to both play and dream in her bedroom (and not feel the confines of our limited square footage!). A woodland theme plays toward whimsy, while displaying lots of colors allows the room not to feel too "theme-y."

My biggest challenge was to maximize space as both a playroom and her bedroom. Creating "stations for play" was my solution, such as an art area area, dress up area, kitchen play area, etc. I also wanted to leave the room's decor open for a possible new sibling (which we're expecting in the fall!), so using blue on the wall (Benjamin Moore's Habor Fog) was my way of limiting the "girly-ness." The pink rug keeps it warm and feminine for now, though, without feeling like you're swimming in a room full of Pepto Bismol.

I used to think all good taste had to be expensive, but now I don't. The bedding, from Pottery Barn Kids, was definitely a splurge, but finding an authentic Jenny Lind twin bed on Craigslist for a mere $80 made it worth it. Making her "tree" was also fun by using branches from the backyard and different green fabrics as the "leaves." These two examples of thriftiness are just a few of the many easy, budget-friendly parts of her room.

Our house may be small, but putting thought and organization into her little space as a bedroom and playroom doesn't make it feel that way. She and her friends run directly to it when we have playdates, and the 3-year-old chatter of their imaginations at work coming from her room have made it so worth it!

Thanks Alison!
