Name: Baby Roo
Location: Bernal Heights — San Francisco, California
When I started thinking about designing a space for our January 2012 baby (nicknamed 'Roo'), I knew I wanted it to be gender-neutral, bright, colorful and modern, with a nod to our urban San Francisco environment. I also wanted to incorporate as many DIY, recycled, and secondhand items as possible.
First on the list was the color palette - I chose bright orange and soft grey, painting two of the walls of the small room grey and using orange on furniture and accent items, like the dresser and the crib. Originally found on the street in hideous condition, we refinished, painted, and added new knobs to the dresser. The crib was thrifted and the rails painted orange to match the dresser.
I made the clouds and raindrops mobile with the help of a friend out of soft felt and batting as another colorful item for the baby to focus on.
Using the Boodalee City decals from Blik on the walls, I brought in two blues as well, colors that are echoed in the striped curtains. Homemade baby blankets, original artwork, toys, and books add additional color and patterns to the space.
The most special item in Roo's room is the walnut rocking chair, in which my mother rocked my sisters and me. The rocking chair was disassembled and crossed state lines in order to take its place in Roo's room.

Love the room! Where did you get the orange organizer on the back of the door?
Looks great-nice work on that mobile! Enjoy rocking that chair. How sweet!
I have to say. I LOVE seeing people doing double duty by using their dressers as changing tables. I think changing tables are such a waste of space and money. This room is super cute and not predicatable. Love it!
gasp! lucky Roo. Beautiful, thoughtful space. Inspired!
I love this room and am already drawing inspiration from it for our son's room (he's arriving sometime in April). Would you mind sharing the wall color, and the fabulous orange that you used on the dresser?
What a great room! I love grey and orange paired together. Do you mind sharing where you found that fitted crib sheet?
Yes, please share where the crib sheet came from as well as the image in the yellow frame!
Love the colors and the dresser is done beautifully; the stripes are a perfect little graphic pop.
