Baby's S's room is not only beautiful, but has special meaning for Shannon and her husband. She shares: The inspiration for this room was the book The Secret Garden: a safe, magical place where our little girl could grow. When I was 32 weeks pregnant, this inspiration took on even more meaning. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, which had spread to a lymph node, and during my two surgeries and the fear of the unknown, my husband Peter read The Secret Garden aloud to me in the hospital. I took such strength from the idea that we could create a place where we could "live forever and ever" as a family. Designing and creating this space was a true labor of love. Nearly everything in the room was made, refinished, painted, sewn or created by friends and family. We used the nurseries from Little P and Norah as inspiration, adding a little "modern floral" to incorporate my love for graphic prints.
We stayed within our budget by refinishing furniture we already owned and scoring some great deals from Craigslist. One of the greatest coups was finding a fabric that had the antique fairy prints I loved for $8 for 26 images instead of $200 for one. I just cut out the ones I wanted and framed them for sweet decoration that was MUCH cheaper. My husband also created another way to make open-faced bookshelves, using the many great inspiration photos from Ohdeedoh. He found decorative molding that already had grooves cut into it, cut them to length, painted them, and used pocket screws to attach them to the wall. The grooves keep the books in, and it only cost $3 per shelf!
The room is now our sanctuary. Thankfully, it looks like we caught the cancer early enough, so now we are just anxiously awaiting the baby who should arrive any day now to come to her "garden"!
