Kate shares the story of her daughter's beautiful nursery made with love: When putting this room together for Charlotte Grace, I knew I wanted it to be light and dreamy – a space that would spark both relaxation and imagination. I searched for months for a piece of artwork and once I finally found the gorgeous canvas of birdies, it served as inspiration for the rest of the room.
Many of the things in the room are handmade: the two quilts hanging on the bird cage hooks were made by me and the soft, lovely one on the back of the rocker was made by a friend; the bird cage hooks, mirror and pink picture frame were all hand finished and re-painted; I made the butterfly piece (framed by the window) after seeing a similar look on many blogs; and the hanging birdhouses were lovingly carried by Charlotte’s Nannie all the way from Pittsburgh in a suitcase and then hand-painted and hung by the two of us.
Many other of Charlotte’s lovelies are special gifts from family & friends: many of her wonderful books (our favorite is “On The Night You Were Born”), Stripes the Bunny, the blabla frog, her many elephants (a favorite collectible!), and – of course – her beloved Sophie giraffe teether.
One of my favorite pieces is the framed print from CurlyGirl Design that reads, “Welcome to the world, Little One. It is even now, that much better because you are here.”
All of Charlotte’s furniture and wall hangings took SO MUCH manual work to assemble and hang; the dresser/changing table came in hundreds of parts and took an entire day to complete. All of this was done lovingly by her Daddy – who loved Charlotte before he even knew her.
The day our little miss was born was the most wonderful of our lives – what happiness the three of us shared, together and with our families. We brought Charlotte home from the hospital and introduced her to this beautiful room that would be all her own. Then, when our baby was just eighteen days old, my husband… her Daddy… passed away unexpectedly.
Now, it’s just the two of us – and while I could not have ever pictured being in this situation, this is where we’re at and we are going to get through this. Yes, there will be tears and struggle – but there will also be love and celebration. We’re about to put our house up for sale and I consider it a gift that Charlotte has been able to spend a couple months in her beautiful room – that her Daddy and I put so much love into – before we leave our home.

Oh Kate. I had to tell you how very sorry I am for your and Charlotte's loss. I'm 30 weeks pregnant and can't begin to contemplate what you've been through during what by all rights should be a joyous times. Thank you for sharing this light and lovely room and the very best to you and Charlotte on the next part of the journey.

Kate, I am so sorry for your and little Charlotte's loss. Charlotte's nursery breaths love, she's a lucky girl to have such a strong mother. My thoughts are with you -
Kate, I also am touched by your story. I'm sorry for your loss and for Charlotte's, but I know there is hope even in the most desolate of situations where there is the love written about here. I wish you luck in selling your house and want to say that Charlotte's room is lovely, although its not forever any daughter would be lucky to call it theirs.
Wow... the room is totally gorgeous! I LOVE the birdy painting you found. Totally the right feel!
I am so sorry to hear about losing your husband and daughter's father. I can't even imagine...
This is such a lovely room. You certainly made it feel very comfortable - a room for both imagination and relaxation.
Your story touched our hearts and we're wishing you and Charlotte the best and lots of luck with moving. So sorry for your loss, you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
A beautiful room. Best wishes.
So, so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful room and loving daddy to put it together. Blessings to you and your sweet girl.
I love this room and the colors you chose. I am not a huge fan of pink so I think the blue is just gorgeous. I also love the birdhouses!
I read a little more of your story on your blog and send you the best of wishes. You are a strong woman and an inspiration to us all.
Beautiful room. I especially like the cherry blossom art and the little bird houses.
I don't know if you already familiar with the Liz Logelin foundation that helps widows and widowers, but if not, you should check it out and the blog of the man who runs it: www.mattlogelin.com. He was married to a classmate of mine, who passed away a day after her baby was born.
My heart skipped a beat when I read the title of the post - I have a 6-day old baby we named "Charlotte Grace", too. I half expected to see her nursery in the pics! Your nursery is absolutely beautiful.
I am so sorry for your and Charlotte's loss. May God bless you both.
I've rewritten a post three times and can't find the words I want to convey my condolences. My own father died when I was 2 (my sisters were 6 and 1) and I'm still in awe of my mother's strength and resilience. I don't know you beyond this post but just reading it, I think Charlotte will be raised by a woman with similar qualities.
(And her room is absolutely beautiful.)
I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you and little Charlotte. You're both in my prayers.
What a gorgeous room. The love and care you took putting it together really shows. The blue paint was worth the effort!
The little bird houses are super sweet.
I am so sorry for your loss. Best of luck to you both in your next space. With all the love you poured into this room, your daughter is lucky to have you.
