My Room: Ellia Marin

Los Angeles, CA

Grey never looked so good. Paola tells us about this fun, colorful, zig-zaggy room: As first time parents, my husband Eric and I spent the entire pregnancy creating the perfect space for our new addition! We wanted something cheerful and modern.....something that felt fun, with touches of whimsy that didn't necessarily scream BABY. It needed to be a bit mod, so as to fit in with the rest of our interior design in our home.

The first challenge was finding the right color combination. We were looking for something bright and unique....anything but the pastel baby pink that would be so very expected. I knew I wanted a charcoal grey as part of the combo, so that narrowed it down a tad. We found a fabric by Cloud 9 that was the perfect fit....aqua, coral, grey and white, and that became the inspiration for the rest of the nursery.

I showed my husband a picture of the chevron wall that I really wanted as the backdrop to the crib, and bless his heart for appeasing a very pregnant lady and agreeing to paint the wall to match. He painstakingly taped off that entire wall (twice!) to paint it the perfect charcoal chevron print.

Once we got the crib bedding made.....we were off to DIY or shop on Etsy for the rest of our accents, since we found this color combo nearly impossible to find in stores. We made sure that we used the same Behr paint for every project (even requested it from the Etsy sellers that did our custom work), so that the room felt cohesive. Three of my favorite Etsy purchases were our owl wall clock (yes, that owl really does tell time!), the abacus, and the whale tissue holder.

We also took on a couple of DIY projects. One was that cornice above the window, which we made in the same Cloud 9 fabric as the bedskirt. Another was the "Baby Love" pillow that we threw on the glider. We also painted all of the storage boxes that we put in the bookcases to match the rest of the room.

We love how it all turned out!
