Kelli created a lovely room for Leo that will easily grown along with him. She shares her process: I wanted my nursery to be non-themed. I didn't want anyone to walk in and see clowns or spaceships everywhere. I started with painting the walls grey because it's my favorite color. I'm a graphic designer by trade, so I'm very into typography.
I added some personal design pieces but kept the cost low by fitting them in standard store bought frames. The baby mobile came from Urban Outfitters. It's not made to be a baby mobile, but when I saw it I knew it was perfect for the vintage and modern look I was going for. It only cost $12 and the photos I retrieved from my grandparents' house. The dresser is my favorite item in the room. It was a cheap Craigslist find. It was antique white and had this huge mirror on top. I chose the yellow because it reminded me of an old boys room from the 50's. I got the hardware from Anthropologie.
I wanted to share my room design because when I first started researching room ideas, I got frustrated by not finding a lot of non-themed rooms. I also think it's harder designing for a boy. Lots of retailers like to have blue and brown in most boy items. I would tell anyone looking to design their nursery to start early and remember that it should be a fun project, not something to stress you out. I started very early and worked on it on the weekends. If you give yourself plenty of time, you can focus more on the little touches towards the end. Sometimes, the smallest of details, can make you the happiest. I still enjoy looking at my old family photos above the crib.
Thanks Kelli! Readers, you can find Kelli here.

Commercial Flour Sa...
can you share the color of paint on the walls? great room!
Good grief, he's a baby not a sad old man. Give him some color. What's wrong with clowns and spaceships??? I'm sure your tiny infant is going to LOVE the typography. Blech.
I love this room! It doesn't have to be bright to be baby friendly.
SLPmama that was totally uncalled for. This is a beautiful, calm room that was made with love. There is plenty of whimsy and fun for a baby. Nice job. :)
Thank you for such a fresh and simple perspective. I really love this room!
SLPmama... way to be a bitch.
I can't stand rooms, or whole houses for that matter, that are overly themed. I had the same problems when I decorated my son's room. I absolutely LOVE this room. The dresser is gorgeous. I've been thinking about doing something just like it, and I think yours has inspired me to use yellow : ) The rug, and the prints above the bed, and the mobile are all fabulous, also. Great job!
I LOVE your decision to use grey...very tranquil. Great for mama and baby to enjoy.
nice job!! thanks for sharing. i have a son as well - now fourteen months - and found very little "boy" decor that i liked at all. we actually painted his room light gray as well...and we have a darker gray crib to top it off(slpmama may not be so into that double whammy:), with lots of subtle accent colors all over the room. i still love it and have yet to regret it!
I think this room is wonderful. We've never done a theme either. As your baby grows the room will evolve with him. My son is now 5 and it was nice to start with a neutral, non-themed design.
Really loving the yellow dresser against the calm grey walls. The room seems to be such a beautifully peaceful space for mom + baby.
SLPmama, i don't know what kind of issues you have that would compell you to write such an an inappropriate comment regarding this room...but whatever they are, please deal with them in therapy. this is a wonderfully decorated space: inspired, creative and original...and if you find yourself unable to appreciate this then why post anything at all?
Bravo on the choice of grey for your son's room! My six-year-old boy's room is Benjamin Moore Taus Taupe. Depending on the sunlight, it shifts from grey to minky-brown. Grey is a brilliant color for art work and bright things in general. (My God, that yellow dresser rocks!)
Once he starts reading, will his bookshelves be wall-mounted or on the floor?
Thanks so much for sharing your photos.
Love this room and so happy to see someone else with a crazy bright yellow dresser :) I couldn't agree with you more on the littlest details turning out to be your favorite. That is definitely the case with our son's nursery as well. We have these vintage bass elephant hooks that make me ridiculously happy every time I look at them. Great job on the room!
What a great room!...Makes me want a baby boy. :)
Love the rug! Where is it from? Thanks!
I love this room, especially the tranquil gray with that yellow dresser.
Where did you find the bedding? We are planning for our own little guy or girl and it is so hard to find bedding in our price range that isn't ugly.
Yikes! Sorry everybody! I apologize for the comment; It was quite snarky of me.
I guess this room was the straw that broke the proverbial endlessly gray-roomed camel's back for me, but I should have worded it better.
This room was done by someone with love for their child and I was out of line. *Slapping self on the wrist.*
thanks for all the kind comments. The paint color is SW Gray Matters. And yes the only thing I still need to add is a book case. I want a thin tall white one. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect one. We also have a shelf system in the closet so I have his books in there for now along with small tins filled with his toys.
The room is very nice (and full of color!)
I too also like the gray walls, and you are right in thinking that this room color and lack of a theme will grow with your son. I think it's a wise choice. I really like the yellow dresser, new knobs and round rug, as well as all of the artwork.
My only question/concern: Is Leo standing yet? If not, he will inevitably attempt to pull down those posters next to his crib. Keep them there for now (and make sure they are plexiglass!) But keep a watchful eye...
Oh yes, thought about that Leo being able to grab at the frames. We'll eventually move them. He's only 3 months old now.
Kelli, love the room!
We're thinking about naming our second Leo. Have you gotten any strange comments about his name or do most people like it?
I think most people ask if it's just Leo or Leonardo. We liked it as Leo because my husband's sign is Leo and he loves lions, plus we're not Italian. So it just made sense as Leo. Leo's middle name is Midnight. I get more comments about that but most people seem to like his name a lot.
Jesus, people! I don't think SLPmamas comments were "uncalled" for. People aren't allowed to have an opinion anymore? Lay off the poor woman! I agree with her, but I love the pops of color in this room. I work at a preschool, and for the record, kids love typography prints. They're great for the toddler years when introducing the alphabet- kids love to practice their alphabet with them.
ske, I think I've seen that rug at Urban Outfitters.
Non-themed rooms rule! Woohoo! My mom was so disappointed when we told her that we weren't doing our nursery in a theme or specific color.
But I love these rooms the best and am so glad that we're not alone!
radioriot, here are some cute typography alphabet posters: http://www.etsy.com/shop/afterthewhitewhale
beautiful non themed room! I am also a fan, I absolutely love your baby's room, the nice grey colour on the wall, calm, with the clash of colour here and there...way to go!
As a mom who likes modern aesthetics and typography myself, my girls' rooms are fairly neutral but that actually frees us to introduce and rotate colorful toys and books and wall decor without having to be too concerned with having the room decor distract from it. There enough "pop" in kids' toys, books, and artwork to bring color to the room and babies see strong contrasting black and white graphics better at this stage anyway. I can't say this for everyone else but the bedroom is primarily for sleeping and resting and quiet time (at least in our home), do we really want an overdose of color or themed graphics?
radioriot, it wasn't that she said anything at all, it was how she (initially) said it. Expressing an opinion doesn't have to mean being snarky - and even SLRmama recognized that herself when she came back and gracefully apologized.
That said, I really don't understand the point of making negative comments on rooms that people are so obviously proud of. It is, after all, a matter of taste -- and just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. This is not to say that you're not allowed to have an opinion, it's just that it's not always necessary or polite to express it. If you are the type that just HAS to say something no matter what because it's YOUR OPINION and YOU'RE ENTITLED TO IT BY GOD, well, I'm sure people really enjoy you at parties.
Sorry, rant over! And I love the room!
Love the room! i'm a fan of non-themes as well and this room is proof that you don't have to be matchy matchy to make a room work. Having a great neutral as the backdrop allows for pops of color throughout. The white rocking horse is lovely!
My little guy's name is Leo too -- just Leo (he's 2.5 weeks old). Is Leo a strange name or something? I thought it was pretty normal :)
