We love the way the sunny yellow plays off the more serious black and white in Maya's room. Jennifer shares: We completed most of Maya's room while pregnant, and we kept the sex a surprise, so her room started out gender neutral with a black, white, yellow theme. After she was born, we added more feminine elements - the rug, wall art, things I had lying around in addition to her toys and gifts of course.
Our apartment is an open loft, and our bedroom and her nursery are upstairs in a shared open space, so we wanted her room to not be totally out of place with the rest of our apartment. Her wall is the only painted wall in our place - we thought yellow would be a bright and happy accent color for our baby's space as well as help define it from the rest of our apartment, that and I love black, white and yellow.
My favorite element is definitely her mobile - it was a labour of love! I first saw it here on Ohdeedoh and knew that I would make one for my baby. I started it when I was five months pregnant and finally finished it when she was 4 months old! I also like how the art on her walls turned out, I did a lot of searching before I finally determined what to hang - it's a mix of things found online (le Train Fantome, Creative Thursday, Fifi Lapin), a local store (The Cross Design), and the flowers which I had lying around for ages and finally had a reason and color to paint them. We also love sitting in the glider (a generous gift from my parents) and reading - a bunch of the books were actually mine when I was little. I was worried that black might be a bit ominous for a baby's room, but I think it's ended up a cosy and playful little space where we enjoy hanging out, that will also grow with her.
Thanks Jennifer!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Beautiful room and
I absolutely LOVE that mobile. Would you make one to sell?
Where is that huge elephant from? I adore it! This nursery is definitely one-of-a-kind! It's absolutely beautiful!
@Design in my dreams That mobile is the easiest thing in the world to make. It's a free pattern by Spool sewing, you can google it. I recently helped my seven year old niece make one for her room, and it was finished in a day. It's just hand sewing of the easiest kind, and you make a few birds so you get to practice. If you can sew on a button you can make it. If you really decide that's too much I'll make one for you, I don't have a new baby. You can DM me on twitter at @mendocinostring and we can talk fabrics and prices.
I too am in love with the mobile! Such a fun, bright room. Well done.
We made a mobile from the Spool pattern with some great fabrics they have at their small, well-curated shop. We, too, tried to do the multi "branch" approach, but failed miserably to get it to balance. The alternative that worked for us: a larger single branch with smaller branches still attached. A crowd-pleaser no matter how you make it work in your room.
Just curious - where these cribs are coming from? I notice them in every second nursery tour - is it like a Expedit book-case version of a crib. Is it a new trend?
thanks for the comments :) the elephant was from Home Sense - a Canadian discount home department store, but I got it ages ago. and yes, the spool pattern is a great one - the key to balancing we finally figured out was to start at the bottom branch. attach the bird(s) you want to be on the bottom branch, then take a finger and balance the stick on one finger - the place on the branch where your finger is balancing it is where you need to attach the string to go up to the next level. repeat this on every branch moving up - put your birds where you want them and then find the balance point and attach the strings - tricky, but doable!
@design in my dreams - if you love the one I did, I would consider selling it - these photos are from ages ago...you can dm my husband on twitter @bjenkinson and I'll get the message.
Can you please tell me where the rug is from? Thank you. Such a cute room!
