James and Lisa shared some photos and info with us about Everett's nursery: We wanted to capture a clean and calm feeling for the room. We decided to paint the walls white and had our 4 year old daughter, Elle, paint a large canvas before Everett was born (seen above the crib). Then after he was born we took an avalisa canvas and had some craft time again with my daughter to complete the canvas seen above the changing table.
Everett loves looking at both of the art pieces that were made just for him, and Elle gets a kick out of showing guests what she did for her new brother.
Although I think the painted art makes the room what it is, I started conceptualizing the room after purchasing the Marimekko fabric seen with the Netto polar bear rocker. I put a large mirror by the one window to open up the room and add more light. The framed unstretched canvas was something I had done to waste time during my senior thesis in college, and as it turns out it fit the nursery’s “I love you” theme after all of these years.
We love the small space, and every time we are in the room with him we are immediately calm and are glad that it turned out the way it did. The thing we love most about the space is the handmade personal touches that we will have forever.
Thanks James, Lisa, Elle & Everett!

Sheex Bedding
What a calm and peaceful nursery. I love it!
I love it, too, and the white makes it feel really open and airy.
Beautifully done.
Really calm and beautiful - congrats. I love the piping on your monte chair. Tell me more about the birch painting - it is my favourite element! (Or is that the fabric??)
I really like that!
wow, you see a lot of nice spaces here but that's truly inspiring.
I just love the art work, especially that it isn't all "baby-baby". It's really beautiful - brilliant!!!
Love the artwork! Where did you find the "i love you" canvas? Also, what type of paint did you have your daughter use to further decorate the canvas? Watered down acrylic???
Beautiful, beautiful room. So serene.
I have been a long time oh dee doh reader but I created an account tonight JUST so I could leave a comment on this post.
I LOVE this room. It is absolutely perfect. When I was pregnant last summer with our 3rd little boy I knew I wanted lots of white to create a serene feeling but I also wanted some touches of 'ocean' colors. While I love all the white I hadn't quite figured out how to mix in the blues and greens and I love that this room accomplished that.
What a wonderful place for baby to rest, grown, and discover his world!
I would love to know where the 'i love you' canvas was purchased (above the change table, though I love all the art work!) I can't think of a better theme for a nursery than Love!
I don't think I can start to explain just how "right" everything in this room feels. Absolutely gorgeous in such simple ways!
love love love. this is a perfect nursery. Sure it looks like you made a fair investment - but done elegantly so. All the pieces you picked with have a future life (gosh do I hate babyish baby furniture!). Your son will really be able to grow with his room. And the art you picked would look great anywhere in the house.
I'm also a HUGE fan of letting preschoolers loose with paints and big canvas!
one question - I am loving the birch tree art. Is that a Marimekko fabric?
lovely!
Oh, nice. One of the best tours ever. Love the artwork especially.
I too love the feeling of this room and the great use of art. I liked the canvas too so I tracked it down here: http://www.avalisa.com/product.aspx?pl=3&col=3&id=458
I LOVE the artwork in the room (furniture too, but it's the art that makes the room more than a showroom for nice modern furnishings.) Really gorgeous.
But, can we see a picture of the room when the baby gets older and toys get spread around? :-)
Beautiful room! Did you restrict the color choices for your daughters painting? It's amazing that the colors she picked mesh so well with the colors of the room. If I asked my 5 year daughter to piant something for a nursery it would be pink and gold and maybe some blue. Or most likely she'd paint a butterfly or her pet goldfish.
I was trying to think how to write how much I like this room, but every other comment sums it up for me.
Everything is just right in this room! No unnecessary clutter at all!
This is just...beautiful! I am not normally a fan of white but this room is perfect. The art makes this room seem so warm and inviting. Now, I want to run off and make a room white in my house!
Just splendid! Love the simplicity and how the room is so inviting. What crib is that? I love the mix of dark and white wood. Thanks!
What a beautiful room.... so calming - i love!
I love the aspen tree picture- I would love to know where I could get something similar!
I'm not the original poster, but the birch canvas is from Marimekko. It looks great in this nursery!
I like it, but it strikes me as somewhat cold. When you have so much smooth white in one room you need texture to keep it from seeming cold. Perhaps a sheepskin rug, some fluffy cushions, a throw, anything. I do like the Marimekko wall hanging, I've always liked that piece but never thought of it in a nursery before, although it really works there.
Mrsjonsgaard--This is a good price, I think: http://www.scandinaviandesigncenter.com/Products/usd0/trademark/Marimekko/4014/Kaiku fabric&VariantId=02
Beautiful and peaceful. The only thing I would change is the lampshade. It looks a little stark against the white walls. Maybe a nice apple green?
Beautiful!! Usually this spare look is not my taste, but it has enough character here that it really works. My favorite is the Marimekko fabric and the polar bear rocker combination--it makes it feel like you have a front row seat to watch a handsome bear take a stroll through the woods--but I also love the incorporation of your daughter's artwork, and how you let her add to the avalisa piece and really make it custom for the room. Beautiful!
Oh, and Pencils, thanks for posting the Marimekko link--I'll have another nursery to be decorating soon, and I could really see this making its way into the room.
Thanks Si for posting the link for the canvas.
I think this is my very favorite nursery shown on this site. I love everything about it. So refreshing and love the artwork on the walls - how special. The only different thing I might have done is have a chair with color to add a bit more pop. Well done!
to answer some of the questions:
the paint I used with my daughter is called gouache. You can buy it at most craft or art stores. It mixes with water and can give you great color variations depending on how much water you use and water colors you buy/mix together.
some tips on painting with a 3 year old for a specific look:
I definitely limited the color choices for my daughter to ensure that the painting would fit perfectly in the room. I didn't give her all of the colors at once. If I had she would have wanted to just mix every single color together for the whole thing. I also would switch up her brushes along the way so there would be different size stroke marks. We did the activity on the floor and I periodically turned the canvas to make sure the whole thing would be painted since it was so large for a 3 year old to paint.
the "i love you" canvas is from http://avalisa.com/ (also added the gouache here)
the marimekko fabric I bought on sale at http://www.alwaysmod.com/
the rocker is monte. I love it. I went for more of a nuetral color choice so I could possibly reuse it in a different room in the future.
furniture is Oeuf. http://www.oeufnyc.com/
Beautiful Room!
I would also love to know what kind of paint & the colours used for the art above the crib. I love that it was made by the older sibling - such a fabulous idea!
What a beautiful gift from a sister, and I love the colors.
What a gorgeous nursery!
This is a simply beautiful room... one of the best I've seen on Ohdeedoh!
I just love this room!! So peaceful and loving!! The "I love you" theme is an awesome idea!!
Beautiful design - brilliant, thank you for sharing!
STUNNING!!! This is without doubt the most gorgeous nursery I have ever seen - and I've seen A LOT! You have done such a fabulous job. Well done!
Any ideas on how to hang the big Marimekko?
Would you buy stretcher bars and attach?
