There is absolutely nothing gloomy about this rainstorm room! Dad-to-be Marco tells us more about this lovely space: My wife Michelle and I are having our first child (a girl) in 2-3 weeks. We wanted to create a nursery that flowed seamlessly with the rest of our house, looked and felt clean, and most importantly, wasn't pink! We decided to go with a loose theme of a rainstorm and chose to have everything in the room gray and white with pops of primary colors.
We chose gray for the walls to kind of represent a storm cloud, painted rain drops on the walls, chose some rain themed art, and used some umbrellas. My wife made the mobile from a tree branch and made rain drops, clouds, umbrellas and birds out of felt to hang from the branch. My wife also made the pillows with the appliqued birds and octopus.
While on a run near our house, I found an old crate in a dumpster which I re-purposed into the toy box. The rocker my wife found at a garage sale and recovered it with the gray fabric. It was originally a great 80's rust color.
The light we found at a little shop in downtown Greenville called, Art & Light. It's an antique spaghetti lamp. I'm sure we'll have to move it into another room once Ruby gets old enough to throw something at it. The dresser and desk were wedding presents to my grandparents when they got married over 70 years ago. They're now ours and includes a bed which we'll probably set it up once Ruby's ready.
This room has quickly turned into our favorite room in our house and we'll often find ourselves hanging out in it.
Thanks Marco, Michelle and soon-to-join-you Ruby!

I love the theme and the umbrella hooks. Where are they from?
That's funny Gwen!
The umbrella hooks my mom found in the discount bin at Hobby Lobby. We painted them white.
Too cute!
My name is Michelle, my hubby is Mark and our daughter is Ruby :)
Love the room, the colours are beautiful.. and I'm jealous of your crate toy box!
Love the room. One piece of practical advice: you probably want to put the hamper next to the changing table ... you are going to be doing a lot of RIDICULOUSLY messy clothes-changing, and tossing that stuff across the room can be a little difficult when you're trying to keep your young gymnast from catapulting off the table. Congrats, and all best!
Love the pops of color against the grey walls. Great job!
Where's the crib from? And is that one of Annie's paintings on that shelf?
This is such a lovely room, and the crate toy box is wonderful... perfect for when Ruby starts to crawl!
Love this room. Great job!! Would you mind sharing your gray color and do you have this color any where else in your house? I'm going to changing our lvg room walls gray from a amber color and I love how you are able to put such happy colors with it.
Is the crib from DwellStudio?
Beautiful nursery!
I only wish you hadn't gone negative on the pink nursery. I love pink. It can be such a lovely and inviting color. My daughter's room was pink before she was here (and it was the guest room) and it looked beautiful with the white linens and navy accents. Why is there so much pink-hate out there? You never hear people say, "No blue!" for a boy's room.
Anyway, probably not the proper post for these thoughts (because I really do love your beautiful nursery) but the pink-hate has been irking me lately.
The room turned out so awesome! We are really excited for you guys and can't wait to meet Ruby!
Love,
Ali (& Tim)
I love it! I absolutely love rain and rain-inspired decor cuz it makes me happy, but my family thinks I'm weird. I'm totally gonna do this if I have a kid.
Is there a trick to cutting felt? I cut a hummingbird out of felt recently with regular scissors and found it difficult to get the small cuts.
@morgs831
The crib is the Oeuf Sparrow in gray. I have it in walnut and LOVE it.
First of all, congratulations! Your baby is so fortunate to have such stylish parents.
Secondly, I absolutely love this. BEST room I've seen. Maybe it's because rainy days are my favorite. Maybe it's because you made gray so colorful. Maybe it's also because as soon as I saw this, I became a design thief. I totally want to do this for my new room in my house. Thank you for the inspiration!!
@HACB what does it matter to you that they decided not to go pink for their baby, in their own house?
I think the colour and theme are wonderful, and great if a future brother ends up sharing the room.
I can't bear the blue/pink thing (I think it's cliched, and I like a room to be gender-ambiguous. I even baulk at pink or blue outfits for girls or boys). My boys have a grey room with yellow/black/white accents and my girls have the same grey in their room with mint green and multi-coloured accents. Works for us.
Thanks for all the great compliments and advice everyone!
The crib is the Oeuf Sparrow. Great crib. Except it does scratch easy. Also, assemble it inside the room. It doesn't fit through the door. Found that out the hard way.
The color is Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray. Gray's will either be more cool, meaning they have more blue. Or they will be warm, meaning they lean toward a clay color. We wanted to keep the room looking warm so we chose the more clay-like color.
As far as cutting felt, make sure you have small sharp scissors.
