I think Sage's room is one many of us, old and young alike, would love to live in. Joelle shares: As soon as I found out I was pregnant with our little girl, I realized that my home office (and headquarters of my graphic design firm) would need to be converted into a nursery! However we were on a pretty tight budget, so we implemented many of the elements ourselves. A lot of the room is actually DIY which made it a really fun and satisfying project, and resulted in a room full of personal touches.
After much deliberation about the paint colour (Is pink too cliche? Or is a soothing taupe too blah for a baby?) we decided to go with a really pale yellowy-beige colour that looks like filtered sunlight - Benjamin Moore's Almond Bisque (CC-280) which is really warm and lovely and we were going to pair it with pink accents. But then I spied the cutest little turquoise dresser on Craigslist. That cute little dresser, my friends, changed my entire design plan! I said bye bye to the pink accents, and instead went with a turquoise and yellow colour scheme! Or 'goldenrod and robin's egg' if you want to be all fancy!
For the crib bedding, I made my own crib skirt with from Tonic Living. I didn't actually make the blanket and crib sheet though - they are from Pongo Baby. But I did paint the owl and framed it with an IKEA Ribba frame.
Last year we babysat at a friend's house and they had the most comfortable, cushy glider ever! I swore that I would get the same one, and so we did! That was our only splurge in this room and it was a good one. Many an hour have been spent in that chair already, rocking and nursing the babe.
I created the 'You Are My Sunshine' print to add some colour to the shelf, and it's now available in my Etsy shop, inBloom Boutique. The doll was sewn by my great grandmother! And the little dress is something I made a few years ago - I just mounted it onto a canvas.
The chandelier was on sale from Canadian Tire for $50 - down from $80. But it was gray with pink crystals, so I spray painted it yellow and found the clear crystals on clearance from Rona.
The lamp and side table were cheapy cheapies from HomeSense, and the flower pot was an old one that I spray painted blue to match the decor. The plant is, believe it or not, a cutting from a plant that was in my own baby nursery - yes, the plant is still alive and kicking. And I decided to give the side table a bit of a sprucing, and so painted a chevron pattern on top for fun.
For artwork in the room, my sister bought me this awesome wooden laser cut alphabet from Toronto's own Bookhou. It's gorgeous! But the colour of the wood blended so perfectly into the wall colour that you literally couldn't see it. I decided to cover a canvas with burlap, and mount the alphabet on top to make it stand out. And my favourite piece in the room is a collage from my friend Céleste Gagnon, a children's book illustrator. It is so delicate and beautiful and so perfect for the nursery - I love to stare at it!
Here she is - the little turquoise dresser from Craigslist that changed the original plan for the room! We use it as a change table too. Above I 'framed' fabric scraps using embroidery hoops - cheap and easy. Sage loves to stare at the colours and patterns when I change her!
Thanks Joelle! Readers, in addition to her Etsy shop, you can find Joelle at her design studio, inBloom Studio.

I love the doll!
beautiful! i love how simple and clean it is, but that it still feels fun and young.
I love both your crib and glider. Where did you get them?
just lovely... perhaps my favorite tour!
So pretty! Love love love
I love the fact that the plant is from a cutting from the one you had in your baby nursery! Amazing!
What I love most about this room is how it's a space that adults (ahem, mom & dad) would want to hang out in without being too "babied out" with cutsie stuff. Very calming and just lovely. Well done!
Thanks so much! :) The crib is actually from Ikea - we researched cribs a lot and it is actually rated very highly for safety. The glider is a 'Bilana' by Best Home Furnishings, and I ordered it from Dear Born Baby in Toronto. Hope that helps!
very soothing...oh so lovely.
i LOVE that dresser. so adorable/classy!
The plant grown from the parent's plant melted my heart. Great room.
I love your choice of the wise and watchful owl to keep your baby safe. It's a very soothing graphic and one I wouldn't have thought of. Nice adaptation in your design, it's very welcoming!
Gorgeous room! I love that the plant came from your own nursery - so sweet! You don't happen to have that owl print in your etsy shop, do you?
I love the owl- you should sell that on etsy.
i think I missed the "my favourite piece in the room is a collage from my friend Céleste Gagnon, a children's book illustrator. It is so delicate and beautiful and so perfect for the nursery - I love to stare at it!"
I see you art and your sister's but where is the magical collage?
Lovely. But I would like to know what people do with the office stuff they remove to make room for their babies. How do you merge it into the household without having that extra room?
Love that aqua + yellow rose quilt, a nice untraditional graphic item but totally retro and sweet, too. Favorite thing in the room! Don't see that every day. Pongo Baby looks like a great resource for baby bedding. I had to hunt down that fabric! (It's an Anna Maria Horner 'Garden Party' Social Climber in Ice Blue, in case you want to know!)
I kind of love the story about the chandelier - that sounds so totally like a pregnant nesting-hormones story, finding something 'perfect' and then upcycling the heck out of it like your life depended on it. I totally forgot about that feeling until I read your backstory! And it looks great.
Thanks for all the lovely comments! :)
Céleste Gagnon's lovely artwork can be seen here with some more pics of the nursery's details: http://inbloomeventdesign.blogspot.com/2010/08/sages-diy-nursery.html
I moved out of my office and invaded my poor husband's office (otherwise known as the 'guitar hole'!). He was ousted unfortunately, but still uses it to rehearse.
Aha - thanks for the fabric deets! I totally had nesting hormones big time and attacked every detail like my life depended on it! But we had a blast decorating the room. We felt so inspired. And we so happy to share it here!
lovely room. i just finished doing my little boys room a while ago.. finally got the chance to put pictures up on my blog http://www.henatayeb.blogspot.com
I love this room, I especially like the fact that it's not too girlish or babyish, but still looks calm and cute.
It's so cozy, I love it! I wish there was a better shot of the light fixture. I have so many ideas for our nursery, but I'm afraid to do any painting or spraying while I'm pregnant, but who has time after the baby comes!
