Take out the crib and a few toys and isn't this a room we'd all love for our own? Molly tells us about Zoe's pitch perfect room: My husband and I had so much fun putting our daughter's nursery together. We wanted it to be fresh, modern, and feminine, yet not over-the-top girly. I've had many sources of inspiration, but it took finding the peach/orange fabric in the bargain bin at Jo-Ann's and the vintage Vera Neumann scarf on Etsy for the room concept to finally begin taking shape.
One major difficulty for us was the size and layout of the 7x13 room, which includes a radiator and three large windows, thus limiting our floor plan options. It also lacks a closet, so finding the right storage solution took some effort. I wanted a dresser with modern lines to complement the crib, that wasn't too deep yet had ample storage. We ended up having one custom-made at a local furniture store in Somerville, MA called Sunshine Lucy's. We are thrilled with the result and the price couldn't be beat!
We saved in spades by purchasing our low bookshelf, picture ledges, and rocker at Ikea. Our chevron rug was a steal at $69 from Urban Outfitters and our modern crib (now discontinued) was on sale at Babies R Us. The aforementioned dresser turned out to be an ideal solution that was far cheaper than anything from Pottery Barn, Land of Nod, etc. We decided against purchasing a bedding set and instead used the fabric I found for $4/yd to make a crib skirt with the no-sew tutorial I saw on Young House Love (which seems to be popping up on nursery blogs everywhere -- and with good reason!). We also had changing pad covers and throw pillows made using the same fabric.
In addition to the Vera scarf, I fell in love with the Darling Clementine artwork featured on Ohdeedoh earlier this year. I love how graphic and mod the prints are -- I hope she enjoys looking at them as much as I do! I've also known for some time that I would display her books in one form or another; I'm a preschool teacher and I've witnessed firsthand how often children gravitate toward books when they can see them! Lastly, I commissioned my friend, Carrie Harvey of Brooklyn Twinkle, to design a special gift for Father's Day using a favorite scene from the film, It's A Wonderful Life as inspiration. (The movie has special meaning for my husband's family and we've always said we'd call our little Zoe "Zuzu" as a loving sort of nickname.) I'm thrilled with the finished product and now we have a unique work of art that is truly close to our hearts.
On the whole, we're very pleased with the way her room turned out. Every time I enter it makes me happy. It's so hard for me to choose, but I'd have to say that my favorite elements are the dresser, artwork, picture ledges, custom pillows, and pink/orange Jonathan Adler lamp. All it needs now is our sweet baby girl!

ADORABLE! Love this room!!
So lovely!
I love that it's sweet and girly without being saccharine. Great job, neighbor! My mom grew up in Malden-- still have family there! We live in Wakefield :)
Absolutely gorgeous! I love everything about it!
Love it! The scarf is lovely and what a wonderful inspiration for the entire room.
Gorgeous room! Have you had any problems with the crib? We have the same one and the paint easily rubs off and the wood has started to split. Absolutely love the way it looks though, and the storage is great, just wish it had lasted longer.
Thank you all so much! :) Kristin, I haven't had any problems with the crib yet, but thanks for the heads up!
It is very cute, but I'd have to say another gray room with white gloss furniture has been done a thousands times. I miss colored walls.
lovely way to use the space - good job!
Lovely! Although I will admit that it kills me to see that rug in your room--the day I decided to buy it for my son's nursery, it sold out, and I have been trying to track one down ever since. It looks gorgeous with the peachy pinks here.
Beautiful nursery....very clean and crisp yet fun at the same time.
@Lille The rugs are back in stock at Urban Outfitters. I ordered the gray one this past week.
Just lovely.
Love the room and especially the rug and dresser. I'm two weeks away from having my third daughter. Still working on the nursery, which is even tinier than yours at 7' x 8' (and I guess it's been done to death according to someone's comment here, but I has cream trim and the walls are white with a smidge of gray in it, too!!)- but I really would love to know where you got the turquoise whale in the window (is it ceramic or a pillow?). I live in Seattle now but am originally from Marblehead and I am slightly obsessed with whales!!
Thanks, Canisu! Here's where I bought the stuffed whale: http://www.etsy.com/listing/59801285/olindo-tha-whale-handmade-in-italy?ref=pr_shop
There are plenty more to choose from as well!
In regards to the comment about the overuse of gray walls/white furniture, all I can say is I'm really happy with the decisions I've made. Like eurakame, I too love color! However the room is really very small, so I chose gender neutral colors (allowing flexibility for the future) that wouldn't overwhelm the space, and also keeping it serene, light, and fresh. I'm sure your room will be just lovely! You're the one who will be enjoying the space (along with your little one) so choose items/colors you like! :) Hope the next two weeks go well! Best wishes to you!
Thanks! Since we weren't planning on having more kids we gave away most of our baby stuff. I really wanted one of the simple Ikea cribs, but they've been pulled from the market. So I have a crib that is still white but not as cleaned lined as I'd like. But since it's my third - I'm really not sweating it!! I've ordered some great prints by Blanca Gomez from Poster Cabaret and have a few other vintage finds to put in the room - but truly the crib and the dresser basically take up the entire room!! I do love color and love that my base is neutral (with light charcoal carpet) so I can change my mind too about accessories and other decor on the room!!
Thanks for the etsy link. Enjoy the rest of your New England summer!!
Molly! This is all so beautiful. When are you going to let us see the rest of your house? I think we need the inspiration from folks who can pull together a nursery as lovely as this one!
I love this room (I actually have the same rug!). I seriously thought that dresser was a paul mccobb! I cannot believe you had that made - it is beautiful! great job on the whole room!
Hi Molly,
I'm trying to build up my baby's library and was wondering if you could give me the titles of the books on the shelves. I recognize Pippi, Whistle for Willie, Madeline, and On Top of Spaghetti. The other books I can't make out, but the covers alone look enticing!
Great job on your nursery. My husband and I looked to it for inspiration and followed suit on many of the things you did--paint color, lamp, and shelves. We've adapted your design for a boy, and it looks great. Thank you!
Hi Molly,
I love your daughter's dresser and have been searching for something similar since my two little ones will be sharing a room soon and I need ample storage. I live in Cambridge so was thinking about going to talk to the people at Sunshine Lucy's and wanted to see how your experience was with them. I get nervous making a custom dresser. Thank you for sharing your pictures!
So sorry for not responding sooner! I just now happened to see your comment. I LOVED my experience with Sunshine Lucy's! Eddie was especially gracious and helpful. Having never ordered a custom piece before both my husband and I were nervous, I'll admit, but the results truly exceeded our expectations. I just printed out a picture of a this mid-century modern dresser: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stewf/2234480162/. The result was spot-on! It's been nine months and I'm still thrilled with it. :) I will definitely be using them again at some point. I'm happy to answer any other questions you have. Best of luck!
Hi there,
I'm also interested in getting a custom dresser built at Sunshine Lucy's. How has your dresser been hoding up since you've had it? Would you still recommend Sunshine Lucy's?
Thanks!
Such a great room! How has the rug held up for you? I was scoping out the Urban Outfitters site and some of their reviews of the rug were not so great - hasn't held up well, gets dirty super quick etc. Curious what you think of it now that you've had it around for awhile. Thanks!
