Nalgene Water Bottle Swapout in Davis, Ca

This is a really nice step in the right direction: In an effort to reduce single-use plastic water bottle consumption in Davis, Ca, the city has teamed up with Nalgene to run a massive reusable water bottle giveaway.

It's all part of a unique initiative called the Nalgene Community Sustainability Program.

Nalgene will donate a number of reusable bottles to employees and residents in Davis -- additional bottles will be for sale and the proceeds will go directly towards the city's other sustainability programs.

It makes sense that Nalgene would pick Davis, a city that has already restricted the purchase of single-use plastic water bottles (and a city that has the best farmer's market in all of California, as far as we're concerned).

We used to be hard on Nalgene, but ever since they started phasing out their BPA-laden plastics, we've been hopping back on the bandwagon.

Do you drink out of a Nalg or did you stray after learning about BPA?

I do wish it were Sigg or Kleen Kanteen doing this, but at least Nalgene is trying. Now if only they would start a recycling program their old crappy bottles!

I'm concerned about the leaching... I do my best to avoid water in plastic as much as I can.

Nice try, but I'll stick with a company that does not manufacture restraints for animal testing, thank you.

While Nalge Nunc International does not condone "the inhumane treatment of animals," they basically say that forcing animals to suffer for medical research is worth it. They don't make any comment on the ethics of cosmetic testing on animals. Leaching toxic chemicals is the least of my concerns with Nalgene.

I love my nalgene thankyouverymuch. I teach 3 hour classes, which means I'm talking for 3 hours straight, and by the end I've almost depleted my 32 oz of goodness. Its perfect for me.

Nalgene's aside, Davis is awesome!

None of my nalgenes are used for water any more - we've switch to spaghetti jars.

I bought a kleen kanteen for the hubby and I. I put hot tea in my bottles, so plastic is out, now.
