Los Angeles couple, Victoria and Hans, wanted to create a true indoor-outdoor home with room to for their growing family as well as a space to relax, entertain friends and enjoy the beautiful LA weather. When they spotted the Mar Vista house a few years ago - complete with 360 yard space - they knew it was perfect for them. Since the previous owners had a complete opposite aesthetic, Victoria and Hans knew they would be doing an entire transformation.
Setting a manageable timeline and budget, Victoria and Hans took their time as they tackled the interior space - renovating the kitchen, front room, back room and bathrooms. This included knocking down interior walls to create a more open floor plan. They also created all of the exterior rooms - building hardwood decks off existing indoor rooms to extend the length of each space plus landscaping the entire outdoor area. By fencing off the entire property, they were able to turn the unused garage into a home office and make it part of the backyard room. The final result is a very comfortable and seamless indoor-outdoor home, full of vintage furniture finds and creative space solutions. This bungalow perfectly doubles as entertaining spot and quiet family area.
My/Our style: Comfortable modern.
Inspiration: Anything that we like, no matter where they come from.
Favorite Element: Dark wood floors.
Biggest Challenge: Tackling all of our DIY projects. We re-did almost all of the rooms ourselves and it was tough to get them all done. Since we set a longer time line, we didn't feel rushed but we were really happy when we finally finished. And we are happy with our work.
What Friends Say: People love the indoor-outdoor party "flow".
Biggest Embarrassment: Putting up "temporary" cheap light ceiling fixtures in every room thinking we would eventually change them…and then never did.
Proudest DIY: Figuring out how to use the space of a hallway closet on one side of the wall for the kitchen fridge on the other side of the wall.
Biggest Indulgence: Paying for a landscape designer.
Best advice: A good house is never done!
Dream source: Design Within Reach.
Appliances: KitchenAid refrigerator.
Hardware: Ikea knobs and Design Within Reach house numbers.
Furniture: In living room, Danish sideboard from Surfing Cowboys on Abbot Kinney.
Dining room table from ABC Carpet & Home in New York. (I later stained the surface to create a darker tone.)
Vintage black chair in outdoor backyard room from Pepe's Thrift store on Centinela.
Lighting: George Nelson shade from Modernica over dining room table.
Arch lamp in living room bought from a friend.
Rugs and Carpets: Ikea
Tiles and Stone: Daltile for bathroom tiles.
Ceasar stone for kitchen countertops.
Window Treatments: 3-Day Blinds in living room. Pottery Barn for bedroom.
