Last night I found myself watching HGTV's White House Christmas special, and my favorite idea was probably the most understated amidst the towering trees and cute Bo replicas. In addition to several other good-looking, natural ideas, florist Emily Thompson used quartz crystals as ornaments.

The quartz ornaments, also seen on a tree in the president's guest house decorated by Natural Home and Garden magazine (above), are a welcome alternative to fake icicles. If you like the idea, Sundance and VivaTerra each offer versions of the ornaments. Given their cost (about $3-6 a piece), you can try interspersing them with, say, pine cones and LED lights.

See more of the HGTV special here and get some more ideas from Emily Thompson at Vogue.
