There are many wonderful books about knitting for babies, but they often concentrate on sweaters, booties and hats. Which is all fine and good, but what makes Natural Nursery Knits by Erika Knight stand out for us are the beautiful things to knit for play and decoration.
Some of our favorites include a bird mobile, stuffed giraffe, hare doorstop and a rabbit rattle. Because babies deserve and adore the softest, purest things next to their skin, the author suggests natural yarns like baby alpaca, cashmere, bamboo and hemp that have been naturally dyed.
Not being knitters ourselves, we can't evaluate the patterns or instructions, but we enjoyed leafing through Natural Knits' lovely photographed projects and think this would be a great gift for a pregnant mom/knitter or as a resource for knitters to make gifts for the babies in their lives.
Natural Nursery Knits was released this month by St. Martin's Press.

These are very lovely but I wonder if it is a good idea to put buttons and beads on a plaything for a baby. These are choking hazards. It might never happen that these things will get loose but would you really want to risk it?
i'm a knitter and i adore erika knight! i have two of her pattern books (one for babies, one for small children). i will definitely take a look at this next time i'm at the book store . . .
as for buttons and beads, it's hard to tell from this photo but this looks like a decoration and not a toy. that being said, i did dress my babies in clothes that had buttons without much thought as to whether their chubby little hands might possibly pry the buttons loose. or, likewise, i wore jewelry and clothes with buttons, things that could have fallen, i suppose, into the car seat or something. i'm all for taking reasonable precautions, but where do you draw the line?
