I GAVE one of these desks away FOR FREE when I moved to Boston. It was indeed a "tanker" and couldn't make the move with me. So upsetting...
Our school dumped a half dozen "vintage" steel desks because they where "too big". They were replaced by other office furniture that looked more modern, but less sturdy and frankly, nearly as bulky. Oh, and they had fewer drawers, too. *Sigh*
I don't understand why these "tanker" desks are so ungodly expensive. Don't get me wrong they look cool as hell, but $500? $1000? Recently found myself a vintage steel desk, the kind with the chrome legs and drawers on both sides like the "tanker" for $50 on Craigslist and that is the common price point for one that is not falling apart.
People might also fail to consider how you'd get one of those through a bedroom door.
ugh, I was assigned one of these as a graduate student. Loved the storage, but that was about it.
I despise the corporate world and everything about it, but I adore SteelCase tanker desks! A neighbor was selling one for $150 on my apartment building website's "Bulletin Board" - I got it for $80 and love it! It's incredibly heavy so 2 maintenance guys had to move it to my place. The drawers are very deep & hold EVERYTHING, so my work area looks way less cluttered now. Everyone who comes into my apartment - friends, family, delivery men, the super etc. -comments favorably on it. One even tried to get me to sell it for a few hundred dollars, but even if he'd offered me a few thousand, I wouldn't have parted with it.

Ha - I bought one of those fiberglass chairs - dirty gold - for $20 at a garage sale.
Ad a free old typewriter like the one in the photo!
We had those desks when I started working after high school. HUGE!
Love this old school stuff.
I bought my tanker desk on Craigslist for $30. Had to give it up after a moved and couldn't fit it through the door.
If my memory is correct when these become trendy a few year ago, Restoration Hardware was selling a refurbished model for about $2,000. I think $400-$500 is a reasonable price, given the quality and craftsmanship of them.
Ridiculous prices. There's been a tanker at the local CS for months now. It started out at $85 & is now 50% off. It's been relegated to display duty. If I had the space in my home office, I would adopt it.
I have two tankers, nearly identical to the one pictured above in my office. A perfect backdrop for my vintage stapler, hole punch, in/out boxes (all of which I acquired for $0).
I have a tanker desk I paid about $500 for, and it's a great desk. It's a beheamoth, though.
Surreal, I'm working on the same model desk right at this moment.
OMG! Is that my old Smith-Corona typewriter on that desk!?! Loaned it to a friend (before the advent of personal computers) & he moved & took it with him! I still shake my fist in the air & damn him to heck for absconding with my beloved blue typewriter... with it's carrying case! Arrrgh!
Still have 2 of those very same desk lamps!!!
I wish my office looked like that.
