What's the Best Inexpensive Boost for an Outdated Kitchen?

Q: We just bought our first home. The kitchen is lovely, but oh so 70s! We don't have the funds or patience to do a remodel right now, but we still want to bring it somewhat up to date. We're planning on taking down the corner cabinet and putting the fridge there, taking out the light box, replacing the hardware and painting. Beyond that what should we do?

Should we paint the cabinets? Leave them be and replace the hardware? Do we paint an accent color on the panelling? Paint the lower cabinets a different color than the uppers? Should we try to change the floors? We're awash with the possibilities and could use some help!—Sent by Amy
