Neighbors Making a Difference: The Los Angeles Neighborhood Clean Up Project

This weekend Emily and I joined 248 other Angelenos and the good folks of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Clean Up Project to answer the call put out by our new President of the United States to help give back to our community, city and nation during MLK Day by spending a few hours walking down Sunset Blvd. and cleaning the sidewalks clean of trash to very satisfying results...

Though a bit sweat inducing considering the scope of cleaning up one of the busiest streets in all of Los Angeles, we marveled at how the teams of volunteers who came out were able to transform the normally trash-ridden Sunset Blvd into a trash free zone. Cleaning stretched from literally outside our own door down to the borders of Echo Park where we finished cleaning up countless bits of paper, a disturbing overabundance of cigarette butts (come on smokers, 60% of what we picked up were cigs), bottle, cans, and other items that no longer marred our hood. One has to wonder if we all took the time once a month to do something similar in our own neighborhood with our neighbors to make such an immediate difference to the community and the environment (because the idea of "home" extends out beyond our own doorway). A thanks to everyone who came out, giving our hood a new start for 2009, and especially the super friendly volunteers of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Clean Up Project whose energy and positive spirit embodies neighborhood spirit and community activism.

We'll be looking to join the LANCUP team in a couple of weeks when they head over to Eagle Rock to make LA a better place one pick up and sweep at a time; they clean up areas twice a month, currently focusing on hoods east of the 101 freeway. If you're interested in helping out and making a difference in your neighborhood (or someone else's) or have a recommendation of a neighborhood which you think needs some cleaning, email LANCUP at lacleanup@gmail.com. We hope to see some of you out there!
