Baker Furniture isn't exactly our go-to source for cutting edge pieces (they're classic old-school chic), but browsing their current catalog we saw a lot of innovative ways to mix neutrals. The patterns and textures in these roomsets are pretty inspiring...
Our favorite is the Lexicon Collection (shown at top). The small-print wallpaper mixed with light woods, plaid blanket, and abstract art is an unexpected combo that we think works well.

That Sofield skate server really is GOR. GEOUS. $8,700 GOR. GEOUS? Not so much.
I like it in the sense that it reminds me of my tasteful wealthy aunt... love her, and her style suits her... but it ain't me...
What's that wallpaper in the second to last picture? I love it.
Sigh. I love Baker. I went to the showroom one day and just walked around and sat in stuff...When the salesperson asked if he could help me I told him I was just looking in case I married rich. Actually, he gave me a good tip--they have (at least in the Georgetown store) a floor model sale in the basement. The stuff's STILL expensive, but slightly more in the reasonable for good furniture range.

The Soho store sells off from retail on a fairly regular basis, and their Sale events are pretty substantial. But this is truly heirloom/investment furniture.
Furniture companies intentionally play from a more neutral base, so more people can project themselves into the room (much the same way homes are neutrally staged for resale).
Just cuz they're showing it beige, doesn't mean you have to assemble, upholster or accessorize it that way.

I have a baker couch exactly like the one in the first photo! Only with two seat cushions instead of one. It's from their more urban line, Milling Road, and I got it at 75% off because I bought it at Boyles in High Point, NC. I love it. It's a classic modern, Jean Michel Frank silhouette, but all made in NC and 8-way hand-tied, down cushions etc. I highly recommend Baker pieces, if you can find them at a discount. I paired mine with a vintage rosewood danish modern coffee table and a Turkish kilim purchased in Istanbul.
It's worth the trip to NC if you like Baker and would rather pay Room and Board type prices for much higher quality pieces. It takes them about 6 weeks to make the furniture based on your choices and then they deliver it to you.
