When Katien set out to create a DIY play kitchen for her daughter Neva she had these four goals in mind: to spend under $50 total; use as much recycled materials as possible; limit my driving to acquire these materials, only stop somewhere if it is on my way somewhere else; make it really cute and have fun doing it. Check, check, check and check!

She started with these old kitchen cabinets which she purchased from a construction salvage yard. But that's not all that she reused. Her local recycling center has a once-a-week paint pick up/drop off where she scored all three paints for the project - silver, white and red.

Her husband cut out a place for a sink and a "window" in which Katien cleverly rotates Neva's "view." Almost everything else was thrifted or repurposed from her own home. How much did she spend? $59 bucks total which is only a smidge over her goal and still so much cheaper (not to mention cuter!) than purchasing one.
