At first we mistook the shelf for the LACK shelving unit. Though it is similar, the proportions are undoubtedly EXPEDIT. With the option to use this shelf vertically or horizontally (or even as a bench) this is a great addition to the EXPEDIT line!
The desk (which is supported by a larger shelving unit) would also make a great table-for-two in a small space! Each shape is available in three finishes from IKEA. The EXPEDIT shelving unit is $70 and the EXPEDIT Desk extension is $50.

good -- the Lack tower is annoying and verging on useless because of its proportions. These are much better.
We just bought the largest one and are going to use it as a room divider! Will have to post pix!
agreed, monika1. I have the lack tower - I end up basically stacking large piles of things in its ridiculously tall and thin "shelves". not exactly the point of shelving.
um... hasn't the expedit desk been around for quite a while now?
We have a Lack too but we bought low metal office accessory feet and turned it on its side. makes a great bench and the shelves work better horizontal!
I agree... the tall lack is actually much more useful when turned on its side.

Anyway, I really like the idea of turning the Expedit Tower on its side and using it as a storage bench.
I was just about to ask- is the tower strong enough to function as a low bench?
I love Lack for storing books, as well as paper products and folders in magazine file boxes. It is so nice to be able to store 8.5x11 (or larger) things vertically. I also like that Lack looks more substantial.
Marisajane, it is strong enough to function as a low bench as long as you put some legs in the center for added support. I put six legs on mine, but you may even want eight.
