Viktoria Nygren and Adam Gistedt may work with a needle and thread rather than a brush and palette, but their pillows are as complex as some paintings. While previous lines have been inspired by British Pre-Raphelite painters, their new collection pulls from Chinoiserie patterns, fairy tales, and insects' wings.
The Stockholm-based design team works with printed velvet, applique, bleached linen, and embroidery. Combining traditional and modern motifs with super-saturated colors, the new collections include Meander Garden (Photos 1-2), Chinoiserie (3-4), Aster Remake (5-7), and Papillion (8-10).
Adam, Viktoria, and their US rep Lisa Fontana Rosa provided us with some information on the inspiration:
- For Meander Garden, the "aim was to add depth and texture to where the pattern was placed. These two new colours will give it another kind of expression than the heavier ones in blues, ochres, and blizzard red. Papillion is based on an old book of butterflies that my grandfather had in art school; I liked to take the repetition and thoroughness from that old book, the butterflies almost lend a checkered feeling to the textile."
A few pillows — including the Aster and Chinoiserie — are reworked from previous patterns. For the Aster, they shrunk the size of the pillow and scribbled a newer, more vibrant motif across the front. With the Chinoiserie, they've updated old color combinations with rich purples, reds, and blues.

One of each, please.
Ohmigosh! Must have that Chinoiserie Blue Berry.
Too much for pillows! WHY?
Too much money and the sparkles diminish the nice design.
The first pillow was featured in the latest (April) issue of Style At Home. They are lovely (I prefer the designs on the top row) but to pay $250 and up for a pillow, I would need to have either frontal lobotomy or win a mega-jackpot.
I would almost never pay this amount of money for anything in my house, including furniture. (Except my computer.) But still, it drives me crazy that you can't buy this stuff except through an interior designer. Why bother showing it?
they are really expensive - but think about how much original art costs.
I feel so sad when I see amazing things like this featured, and then I read further and realize I could never afford it :(
Pretty, but too expensive!!!
