It's been about seven years since Barbara Barry last collaborated with Baker Furniture, and now she's back with a truly elegant and wonderfully grayscale collection. We stopped by the showroom at the New York Design Center to see the latest and hear her speak about her work.
Baker furniture prides itself on creating not moments—but movements. As a company that builds furniture inclusive of more periods and styles than virtually any other brand, they continue to uphold their long-held tradition of taste-making by continually producing quality furniture with a focus on Design, Materials, Craftsmanship, and Finish.
Above are some our favorite pieces from their latest collaboration with Barbara Barry. Here's what she had to say about her work with Baker:
On designing the collection:
I feel like I've been designing the collection my whole life. When they asked me to come back, my first thought was 'Gee, do I really have ten more sofa's in me?' And then I Just put pen to paper and 60 pieces later...there it was!
On the color palette:
You only do things you are drawn to. There are no trends. Does the world have trends? Does nature have trends? Gray feels great as a neutral. The finishes aren't too cool and they're not too warm either. It's a fresh break from the tyranny of wood.
On her approach to elegance:
Simplicity. There's so much stuff in the world. The big idea is about simplicity, and in the beginning takes a discipline of many simple choices. You might call it boring, but I believe in subtlety and simplicity are truly elegant.
On her plans for Thanksgiving:
I'm taking in all the strays! I travel all over and I can't wait to come home to my garden, my little puppy and do a little hiking.
