We won't be braving IKEA this month, but if you have it in you, some sweet, inexpensive ways to decorate are waiting there. Perhaps especially for those who are first-time holiday hosts or for those without extensive ornament collections (whether or not you do a tree, ornaments add a festive touch hung anywhere or placed in bowls), the KALLT line offers a ton to choose from. Here are a few:

if you have a good eye you can do much better at the dollar store.
I liked the color of blue set they have except for the hearts. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00144640
More than a decade ago I bought several small boxes of very inexpensive straw Swedish ornaments at the Ikea on Long Island. They were cheap and are still going strong. I mixed them with some stands of cranberry colored wood beads that were from Wal Mart, also extremely cheap, and some pine cones scavenged from neighborhood trees.
The pine cones did not survive, but the other items give my tree a Scandinavian touch every year and remind me of my first real Christmas tree.
I like the repitition of color and pattern no matter where you get your trinkets. I think it's much bettter than too much Santa and Reindeer!
