When you move into a new house, there are always surprises. I'm no stranger to that: the previous owner of my house left his wife's artwork portfolio in the basement, tools in the garage, and — this is a bad surprise — sheets on a bed in one of the bedrooms. But even with all of those unexpected things you can come across, the biggest (and sometimes best) surprises by far can often be outdoors:
That first year of living in a new home can be a wonderfully fun experience of seeing what plants grow and flower from season to season. At my house, that was certainly the case: the first spring we were here, we saw peonies and crocus poke their way through the newly-thawed earth. Later, I discovered tiny lily of the valley growing in the shade of flowering spirea bushes. And late in the summer, surprise lilies came along and — true to their name — continued the garden surprises.
