You've probably heard of Walk Score, an online tool that assigns a walkability ranking to your neighborhood based on proximity to local amenities. An enhanced version has just been released, one that uses actual walking paths rather than "as the crow flies" distances.
Simply type in your location (zip code worked best for my neighborhood) and up pops a detailed map showing various walking routes. There's also a handy chart that breaks the amenities down into categories, shedding light on how your neighborhood fares when it comes to restaurants, grocery stores, and night life. Destinations that are typically pedestrian-friendly, like the nearby coffee shop, are given additional weight in the calculations to produce a more accurate ranking. Check out Street Smart Walk Score to see where your 'hood stands.
