We were thrilled to hear from fellow design bloggers Crystal and Anne about their latest big project, a new online magazine which launches Thursday called Rue. It will cover homes, entertaining, recipes, trends, products and more — including some downloadable stationery as a first issue bonus.
According to the co-founders, Crystal Gentilello of Plush Palate and Anne Sage of The City Sage, Rue will publish online bi-monthly and will cover a wide range of cities. This issue includes features from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and New York.
Sounds good, right? Check out the premiere issue for yourself on Thursday: Rue
Congrats to the whole Rue team on the upcoming launch!

Umm, is that really such a good name for a magazine?
Has it actually launched yet? I can't find anywhere to download it, just says coming Sept 2010.
Never mind, I see you said Thursday. :)
I have no idea why that cover gives me so much anxiety. Could be the disquieting flooring, particularly with that wall color. Could be the matching triplet of black and gold lamp + picture frame & colors + dining set. Could be the likely inability to live up to the "get excited" exhortation, or the concern that if the title slides off the page, the dress won't match anything anymore. Too many worries.
wally, I think it's the woman. or rather the woman's pose. and her shoes. good god those shoes.
i like the cover: purple walls and those great dining chairs. can't wait.
rue 1 |roō|

bitterly regret (something one has done or allowed to happen) : Ferguson will rue the day he turned down that offer | she might live to rue this impetuous decision. See note at mourn .

• compassion; pity : tears of pitying rue.
ORIGIN Old English hrēow [repentance,] hrēowan [affect with contrition,] of Germanic origin; related to Dutch rouw ‘mourning’ and German Reue ‘remorse.’
rue 2

a perennial evergreen shrub with bitter strong-scented lobed leaves that are used in herbal medicine. • Ruta graveolens, family Rutaceae.
• used in names of other plants that resemble rue, esp. in leaf shape, e.g., goat's-rue, meadow rue, wall rue.
ORIGIN Middle English : from Old French, via Latin ruta from Greek rhutē.
I find the cover disapointing-its just a abit cheesy/amateur-
maybe its the pose on the woman with the dress that matches the color of the font..
They are pushing this mag big time on twitter
RUE=STREET in french, was this what they were going for?
This is Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield, I own there book "High Style". The book is awesome!
This cover is all sorts of wrong, starting with the two people on the cover. Looks like an ameteur put this together.
Cormac McCarthy's favourite mag.
Whoa, you guys are a tough crowd! I admit, that pose is pretty stank, but I like the tie in to the dress and the font color. Now as far as the rue=street v. regret, that appears to be one of those "When trying to be fancy goes wrong" decisions.
I agree with the cover! The cover lines are all over the place with not much thought. Maybe I'm just a cover design snob having worked so hard at my own day job to improve our own covers. And who are those people? Are they random? I need information! I think it would be greatly helped by losing the random "Dive Into Fall" and shrinking/moving the "Premiere Issue" under the title.
I know it seems nitpicky, but it's a DESIGN magazine!!
Gosh... everyone... I'm super excited and can't wait to electronically flip through the first issue!!! I think it's going to be a regular stop for me! Best of luck to you, Rue!!!!

The name could actually be cute and clever but the styling of the cover doesn't seem to suggest that. Make these people look like they weren't shot separately a la Annie Leibovitz, svp!
More suggestions (from the tough crowd ;) Better cover line fonts, reduce the size of the name for god's sake (I'd even support doing it in favor of highlighting 'premiere issue'), be brave with the cover lines – this is a modern format, why stick to old-fashioned ways?– and again about the cover pic. A new mag is always exciting and cause for celebration, and this is no exception, so why not take some risks?
Jaime & Ron look stunning & I can't wait for the magazine to come out! If most people had a drop of your talent they'd be thanking their lucky stars.
"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."
— Marilyn Monroe
Everything that is wrong with this cover is from the woman: her pose, her dress, her hideous shoes, and her hair which is probably perfectly fine in person, but isn't styled enough for a magazine and just looks kind of limp and sad in the picture. I take that back, she's not the sole source of what's wrong with this cover, the orange flower arrangement on the left also gives me anxiety.
I can't believe Tyra was right-bad modeling does ruin pictures. At least the woman can smize with the best of them.
I'm kind of baffled by the negative comments. It's no small feat to start a brand new FREE online mag for all of our enjoyment, and for everyone to try to shoot it down is just a waste of time and energy. Just focus on "getting excited" for another great source of information coming to your computer screen, rather than trying to put it down in a blog comment.
Here! Here! I am very excited for the launch of Rue, the content looks fabulous from all the amazing sneak peeks and it's so amazing to see all the hard work of the Rue team come together... looking forward to Thursday!
there is a lot of "wrong" happening here on this cover...
Wow guys! Lets ease up on the negative attitudes already! I'm super excited to check this out on Thursday. From the description & sneak peak pictures, it sounds like it's going to be great! So the cover isn't perfect (the title doesn't need to be that gigantic and cover up the art in the photo), but hey they're just getting started. Think about how our favorite TV shows develop and change and find their groove during the first season. You don't get pissed off because the pilot episode isn't perfect do you? No, you give the first few episodes (or in this case "issues") a chance and hope for the best. I'm wishing the team good luck on their launch and am excited for another potentially great design resource!
I am so looking forward to the launch of RUE each one of these ladies is incredibly talented (don't believe it? Check out their blogs). Those dining room chairs are gorgeous and just the fact they were able to get Jamie and Ron for a photo shoot goes to show, they are on to something BIG! From the sneak peeks we have had from other supportive sites this online magazine is going to be a must read for any true interior enthusiast!
I'm just sad that another online-only magazine is popping up. Will there never be another great shelter publication?
Why can't all y'all doing these on-line mags get together, combine forces, time/energy/investment, and made ONE good print magazine??!!
I know, sooner said than done.
But hey, at least I didn't bitch about the cover.
Don't hate - congratulate!
OMG thorndale, I just about fell out of my chair laughing. And Greige, I don't know why I thought of Tyra Banks when I looked at the chick but on ANTM, she's always talking about the HS pic pose and that's totally what that was.
I will admit, I will happily check this out, I liked the cover and from what I'm reading, these people seem pretty talented!
Premiere Issue...
get excited
Yikes!
So excited to see the cover -- it's bold and I love it! Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see the rest!
Yeah, I can't not wait until Thursday!! Congrats Anne!! I know it's going to be awesome!!
And please people, it's just a cover. Why so much hate in your comments? Think about it, you actually took time in your day to write something hateful!
Life is to short.
callie
ps. I had forgotten what a downer the AT comment crowd can be. Sad. Criticizing a designer's hair? Are we adults? Rather embarrassed for y'all.
Congratulations Anne and Crystal! Hey, everybody lighten up will you? What creative outlet are you taking chances with? So easy to critique work that isn't yours, eh? Where is your risk? Breathe people...it's only a magazine, but a labor of LOVE for those that created it...for all of us! You GO girls!
There's a lot of anonymous Monday morning quarterbacking going on here.
So excited to see the first issue of Rue. The girls really seem to bringing something new and exciting to the shelter mag world.
counting down until Thursday . . .
The criticisms astound me. When you get a present, do you really care how it's wrapped? It's what's inside that is exciting and what matters, and the thought and caring that went into its selection. I look forward with great anticipation to opening our 'gift' on Thursday!
worth checking out. Everyone deserves a chance.
Ron Woodson & Jaime Rummerfield look glamorous as usual. I adore their work and their book High Style and am thrilled to see them on the cover of the magazine! Kudos to RUE for another great piece of eye candy - can't wait to read it on Thursday!
Rue will be good, the shots inside are WAY better than this cover-plain and simple-someone dropped the ball-however since they are online only-should be an easy fix
i'm totally psyched for the launch - these gals are far from amateurs and i'm super confident the content will be top-knotch. relax a bit about the cover, haters. i doubt it will keep you from looking inside tomorrow!
Is it possible that my comment was erased??? Or did I neglect to post it? All I said was, "Now I know why professional models are paid the big bucks. It's not as easy as it looks." Something like that. Anyway, I meant no disrespect to either of these designers. I'm sure that Jaime Rummerfield is absolutely gorgeous in person! But, sorry, this is just NOT a very professional looking cover shot. And, again, sorry, but the problem is definitely the unprofessional models, and quite possibly the photographer whose real talent is shooting interiors, not people. Why oh why didn't they just stick to a shot of the lovely room? Either that, or hire people who understand how to style and photograph human beings. (Actually, Ron looks great. Jaime should sue.)
For the record, I look forward to the magazine. I'm sure it will be great. After all, it's a design magazine, not a fashion magazine. But I disagree with those who think that what's on the front cover doesn't matter. Trust me, it matters.
Looking forward to checking out the magazine! Thursday can't get here soon enough!
Regarding the cover design - photography layout and typography can certainly be improved upon.. there seems to be no hierarchy and the colors can be adjusted .. However I wish you guys all the best in your efforts.. In a perverse way its making us talk about it and therefore its getting feedback good or bad.. awareness is key so there you have it!
Ok, so it's a really cute e-mag. I hope it just gets better!
