Three years ago, my grandfather dug up some of his old nautical charts so I could incorporate them into my wedding invitations. The leftover pages were so cool, I couldn't part with them, and they've been in storage ever since. Unpacking my new apartment last week, I had a brilliant idea.
The bottom of my drawer.
Unable to find drawer liners I liked for some dining room built-ins, I stopped for a moment and perused the contents of my disheveled abode. My eye wandered over to a pile of random pictures and old magazines idling in the corner. There among them was that old maritime guide of Narragansett Bay. Soon, I was measuring, snipping, folding, and lying the sun-faded pages in those old wooden drawers. It was a cinch! And now every time I go to grab a cloth napkin or dishtowel, I think about the sea.
Wouldn't old nautical charts be perfect for the drawers of a house boat, beach shack, or island cottage?
