Even if you're kids aren't allowed to watch TV until or you forbid a cell phone until they're in their teens, social networking in this day and age is nearly unavoidable. That said, there are a handful of sites that are kid-appropriate and fun for them to interact on— and none of them rhyme with schmacebook.

Many kids are already interested in social networking, no matter how young they are. They know parents and siblings are playing around with Facebook and Twitter and they want a fun portal to play on the computer with. Sure you can buy games and there are websites that are safe, but that's not quite the same.

Using reviews by Common Sense Media, NPR has compiled a list of 10 social networking sites that they give their stamp of approval to. They're safe for kids, creep-o free and are a great landing place for your little ones to have a little fun. Most the sites are geared for 7-14 year olds, though we're guessing if you have a savvy 6 year old there shouldn't be any issue.
