News: Amazon Sells DRM Free Mp3's

May 17, 2007

Is this just the beginning? It appears that Amazon will be introducing a music download store selling DRM (Digital Rights Management) free music. What would this mean for you? Well, right now not too much because EMI is the only major record label that has publicly stated an intent to distribute DRM free music.

However, with the backing of Amazon and iTunes, it would be reasonable to expect that other major labels would be motivated to join in on the trend. The result, legal access to a large number of digital music files that would play on any computer or portable mp3 player without the hassle of incompatibilities due to DRM. It's about time.
