Michelle Kaufmann Announces mkHearth

There aren't a lot of celebrities in the green building world -- Michelle Kaufmann is about as close as it gets. So when she announces a new prefab design, we pay attention.

This is the mkHearth.

The mkHearth is Kaufmann's take on the rural American farmhouse -- open, airy space, sleeping porches, sliding doors (on barn door tracks) and, of course, a hearth. The home centers on the hearth, which flows up through all three floors of the home. Kaufmann's signature touches are evident in the clean, modern lines, and the way each room seamlessly flows into the next.

The one thing we always love about each of Kaufmann's designs is that they look like the perfect place to throw a party. The kitchen always opens to the dining room, to the living room, to outdoor space. The mkHearth is no exception. And, of course, all the green features you'd expect -- rainwater harvesting, superior insulation, dual pane windows, eco-friendly finishes, etc. -- are also included in the design.
