Apparently the US Postal Service is not too pleased with Netflix. After an audit, the USPS determined that 70% of those bright red envelopes jam, damage, or just causing general havoc on their sorting equipment.
This translates into a 17% surcharge added for all Netflix mailers. What does that mean for us? A price hike for our monthly fees is likely in the future, but we hope Wired's prediction of a mailer re-design to combat the added fees comes true.
Thanks for your photo, Mr. Guybrarian.

Wow that sucks. I recently canceled my NetFlix account in favor for my library's DVD collection.

I canceled my own NetFlix account because half my discs would arrive cracked or broken. Those flimsy envelopes really stink.
Just canceled mine too - after repeatedly not getting discs or returning them only to have them never arrive. Absurd.
I just started using Netflix in November. So far I've had no problems with my discs. I usually get 2 a week in the mail. I'm addicted to watching HBO's The Wire.
i've had netflix for about three years and never had a damaged disc. my queue is monstrous now though and I can't keep up... it's long since felt like another to-do list I'm behind on!
i love netflix. we get some damaged ones every now and again but it's no big deal. i just report them damaged and send them back. a new one arrives in a day or so. as for the envelopes, that wasn't wired's prediction, i believe, it was a quote FROM netflix. if the USPS makes them pay, they'll redesign. it's certainly not the end for them.
I love Netflix . . . and I've never had a problem with their customer service.
I used to love Netflix too. I convinced quite a few family & friends to sign up as well. After probably 18 months of fantastic service, I started getting one issue after another (after another and another). So frustrating.
I love Netflix - no problems. I've had to send 2 or 3 back since I've had Netflix, which is less than a year. Now, if one doesn't work, I follow the directions on the envelope and spray with window cleaner (a non-toxic type) and wipe it off. Sometimes that will clear up the problem
I'm currently addicted to Lost, which I'm getting on Netflix.
I'm surprised the USPS is not suing Netflix over their repeated bad-mouthing of their service. We all know that netflix throttles heavier users but they'll never admit to it, always blame the delays on the USPS. Yeah right, envelops always take 4 business days to get delivered locally. I believe that.
It's time they stop this unlimited business and just tell everyone how many DVDs you can rent a month based on your paying plan. Would make it so much nicer to plan when to return a movie in order to get another one by a certain date.
And by the way, nowhere does it say that the USPS has decided on this...
Hey, Pixie - Did you know you can watch full episodes of Lost for free on abc.com? I did that all last season, because I kept missing it on TV. Watching on a computer isn't as nice as watching on TV, but at least you don't have to wait for the DVDs .
jyw-Thanks much for the tip. I haven't had much luck yet watching anything on the network sites (not optimized for Mac maybe?), but I'll give those a try. I don't have a TV, so either way, I watch it on my computer.
The only thing I don't like about Netflix is that there is no service on Saturdays. This means a DVD that arrives on Friday afternoon or Saturday is not registered until Monday morning and no new DVD is mailed out until then. Maybe it's a small annoyance...
For jyw, you can use Firefox to watch shows on cbs.com with a Mac (I catch up on CSI episodes that way).
I never had any problems with Netflix. I been with them almost four years, no compliants. If you look at where your DVD are coming from find on that is closer. Sometimes they shipped from an out of town source. I got one from California, but I sent it back to my South Bend source so I can get my DVD faster. I get the three at a time..Watch and put in the mail. You control how many you can watch in a month. Or you can send all of them in the same envelope. They are no wrong ways of doing it. Have fun, this is a service of conveince. I hated going to Blockbuster and then is nothing there for me to rent.
