- What I Love About My Small Home:
- This is my first apartment, and even though it's so small it's just the right size for me. It feels like a much larger apartment because the office, dining table and living area have their own separate "rooms".
I've managed to fit a lot into a space this small but it doesn't feel cramped; I had a housewarming party where eleven of my friends were here at the end of the night and they all had places to sit!
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The apartment itself has some quirks; there's no overhead lighting in the main room, very little natural light for most of the day and a kitchen that was almost unusable.
But the biggest challenge was filling the space smartly. When I moved in, I only had a desk, a chair and an air mattress, and what I didn't have was a big budget. It took a lot of measuring and playing around with possible layouts before I could start buying furniture, and even more craigslist searching so I could get the most bang for my buck.

Very cute. It looks comfortable and cozy, and Nick has made good choices in the furnishings and placement.
Love all of the wall art
I like the way Nick made various living areas in this small space.
Voted and Tweeted!
yeah, this is good. Very good. I love the kitchen chairs. There is a trunk, a real trunk, for a coffee table. Not some trunk-like knock off selling for way too much. The yellow is soothing. I could live there.
I like your red and yellow accents throughout, with cool blue in the bathroom. Great artwork, too!
Wow, for a first place, this is really nice!
Go Nick! You've made a cosy home on such a tight budget. Well done! xx
What kind of chair is that in the corner with Macbook sitting on it? btw lovely place.
Great job! I really like how you used the IKEA shelving unit to separate the living room from the office, and that the shelf is decorated from both sides!
I am in LOVE with your shower curtain! Where did you get it?
I love this - very cozy and relatable. I'm moving to a similarly-sized apartment soon and seeing this got me excited about decorating my place.
And yes, where did you get that shower curtain??
Very creative & budget savvy!
I think that you've made great use of the space and your furniture choices are inspired. Like everyone else, I love the shower curtain and bath mat.
Great Job Nick! Your Apartment looks great and you've done a great job with how you are using the space. Love all the choices you've made!
What a terrific use of space!
Hey Nick, your first place looks great! I LOVE the McCarthy poster.
Great space! 11 people in there? Kudos! I love the shower curtain, and since I am a sucker for detail, I love the door knob on the bathroom door!
you did a good job and the nicest from all the apartments you should be the winner, nice drawing compliment from a pro..... :-)
Very personal! like it!
I've favorited a few but I think I like this entry the most. It thoughtfully put together and I have a soft spot for people who source beyond the high street, if that makes sense. I also love the choice of artwork on the walls and that it seems to permeate the every area. It seems like it's not been hung on the walls because it's decorative, it's hanging thee because it's loved. Wonderful little home...how did you manage to persuade your 11 guests to finally leave? I bet they were dragging their feet!!
first of all, a HUGE thank you to everyone who voted for me, it's way more attention than I'd ever expected. Seriously, all of you rock.
The shower curtain is Marimekko, and I bought it from Crate and Barrel right around June, when it was on sale. The laptop chair is my fake eames lounge chair I got from a store called This Is Not Ikea. I'm not sure about the maker, on craigslist people attribute this specific knock-off to all kinds of manufacturers, but you can easily pick one up for under $200. It is addictively comfy.
I've only been living here since last June, so I'm really proud of what I've accomplished with a healthy dose of craigslist and goodwill hunting.
For a first apartment, yours rocks! and considering you started with nothing and worked in all this furniture within a tight budget.... if only I had a hat... Rock on, Nick!
