Name: Nicole Radford Oehler
Location: Edgewater — Chicago, Illinois
Size: 825 square feet
Years lived in: 1 — rented
Shooting Nicole's apartment offered some charming challenges: Moments before my arrival, her pup, Dolce, pulled down the bathroom's shower curtain, and an outdoor chandelier came crashing down (unrelated). The kitchen is sweet and very tight, complete with only a single drawer wide enough to store sandwich bags (there are cabinets, but only one tiny drawer!). Nicole's enthusiasm for and ability to meet those challenges with laughter, style and ingenuity are what make this designer an original in both her own home and in others'.
As for Nicole's single kitchen drawer conundrum, this is the kind of problem that would cause many a cook to scream and run. Nicole loves cooking for friends yet didn't let a little thing like storage deter her from this otherwise perfectly suitable apartment. She uses Ikea Asker containers for utensil storage, an overhead hanging pot rack, open closet space in the second bedroom (a room which has been designated the "closet room") which acts as a partial pantry, and other kitchen items live in the living room chest/buffet. Considering most dinners happen in the living room anyway, with the table pulled away from the window and into the center of the eclectic room, this makes perfect sense.
Nicole loves to move things around and change things up on a regular basis, and that keeps this traditional-meets-edgy apartment a fun place to live and visit.

Oh, to have a dressing room! I dream of such luxuries. And I love that nailhead/snakeskin desk in the second bedroom. You have a great eye for pretty things.
First your dog is so adorable, that last shot made my day! I love your apartment! The highlights for me were: your TV stand, use of mirrors, vertical storage in the kitchen, your couch, your dyi customized closet using bookcases, your whitewashed bedroom and that you organize your clothes according to color (I'm guilty of that too)! Not sure if this can be seen as deco, but I love your yellow hat hanging in the entrance way, mind sharing the source? There are only a couple of things I wasn't crazy about: big lamp in front of your mirror in the living room....the positioning struck me as odd and the wall of art behind your couch, looks a bit cluttered, but that's just my opinion.
PS - Does your metal bookcase in the living have a built in storage for wine??! That would be awesome if so!
i love this apartment.
i need that nail head/snakeskin desk! where did it come from?!
I also love the desk! Where is it from?! I am looking everywhere for a desk that size that's not boring!
Love so many elements of this space ... the drink caddy, that fantastic dresser in the living room ... but what is that ... thing on the living room floor??
Love all the wall decals. They are all in the perfect spot. Sometimes people dole those out and it just looks tacky.
I want a fork and spoon for my kitchen! Love it!

I agree, very Sex & the City. I love that it looks like she has spent lots of time at flea markets and thrift stores. Lots of coziness.
I love that TV stand idea. I need one of those for my tivo box. What is it and where did you find it???
I also very much appreciate the stacked end tables. genius!
Oh I love this, especially the re-upholstered side chair and the little bar, so pretty. Great idea to put perspex filing boxes on the wall, looks like this space really works for you.
I agree with the use of the decals....will have to get one for my closet area. Enjoyed viewing your apt as I got a few good ideas that can work for a married woman.
You have amazing style. AMAZING. Perfect. You must hear that constantly.
Your style is too good to marry well with the big IKEA pieces. They're sore thumbs in your living room. Brown Elefant must have cheap/stylish replacements!
Love it. Have been looking for something like the stand you have the television on, allowing tivo or dvd to sit underneath.....just what I want. Any suggestions on where to find something similar?
Hi All! Thank you for your comments! I'll try and answer your questions...
-the bar does have wine storage below. Please feel free to donate to the cause.
-The hat is from a boutique in SOHO
-the snake skin "desk" is acutally 1 part of a 3 piece nesting console table. I thought it was overkill and negotiated to buy only the medium size. I bought it years ago in MI for a mere $50 (West Elm carries a parsons desk similar in size)
-My dad also made the stand for the TV. We measured the cable box and did a simple metal design & powder coated it black.
Thanks again for your comments!
Cheers,
Nicole
I adore the vintage rock & roll feel. I would love to get my hands on the dresser/cabinet in the living room. Divine.
Very nice place! Really digging the giant fork and spoon on the wall...very cool!
Pretty darn charming. Any info on the drapes in the living room? I have a problem with drapes and like yours very very much.
What a great girlie place. Nicole, you have a great eye. Lots of fun elements. I recently landed a new job on the N side of Chicago. I'm looking in Edgewater. Any feedback?
@MarshallO- the Edgewater Beach places are right down the street!
@Kushkush- the white drapes are from Ikea and the Gray are from West Elm
@Juleeann- this is a such great neighborhood! Congrats on your new gig & feel free to email me to chat further! Nicole@RadfordDesignInc.com
The living room rug is rather odd - reminds me of a drop cloth or shower liner. The tv stand/dresser might be improved by cutting off the large feet, painting it to blend into the room more and replacing the industrial looking hardware with something a bit more feminine. Love the antique chest.
Ohhh, now the fact that your dog pulled down the shower makes perfect sense. You have a wire haired fox terrier (right?)! I grew up with them...so cute!
I went to your blog and found this http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IOeHtDbGOhA/ThUVHR_wTKI/AAAAAAAAB_4/ftbadm-PD4k/s1600/IMG_5814.jpg
I can't find the mirror on the Target website, but I absolutely love this mirror. It's in my price range. I have a place for it. Do you know what it's called, officially?
@CiudadDuerpo- Best breed ever! Naughty. Naughty. Naughty.
@cathgrl1- I just checked the site as well and no dice. I wish I had a detail photo of the barcode/description on file. So sorry!
Thanks for checking. I decided to risk it by going to a local store directly. Got the last one. Happy, happy me!
Your apartment is cosy and made perfect with all of the items that give an indication of you are. Love that it is not all sweet, bit of an edge...wonderful combination! I would want another comfortable chair in the living room area, but that is me and I'm 50. The only thing I didn't like for me personally? For me, dressers must have knobs. No pulls, no grip underneath. I need knobs! Thank you for sharing your lovely home!!
Your house is gorgeous! Those shoes, however, make my feet hurt just looking at them. They're amazing, but more height than I could ever attempt. Do you ever wear flats?
Love everything about this place! I just ordered the same duvet cover in gray. Glad it looks awesome in real life.
Great style, Nicole! We're practically neighbors -we're in the (SE) RP! I HATED a smaller version of that Stones (MY favorite band!!) canvas that I have, but I hope I still have it -you inspired me! (If you got it at the Brown Elephant, it was prob. our old one -ha!) Yes too many wrongly-placed decals can = tacky, but yours look great, well-placed. Love the fork & spoon, & love the chandy one as well. That little bar is great & would work well in our space as well -too bad it's one of a kind. ;) Yes, that desk is sweet, and your place IS very Carrie Bradshaw (actually better than her place!) I <3 that duvet. The only thing that this veg. didn't love is the living room rug. Maybe we (& our 2 Cockers) will catch you at Senn! :)
Beautiful apartment! Can you tell us where your sofa is from?
I think this is one of the most inspiring house tours I've seen in a while! I am moving soon and it gives me some ideas.
Can you dad make me a bar cart too! I love that one!
Really nice!!! The only element I am not fond of is the cowhide rug :( just makes me feel sad to look at it....
its glamour
All I can say is AMAZING!
