What do you use as your nightstand? A chair? A floating shelf? A large cushion? Or does your nightstand serve double duty as a dresser or a desk?
Here are some ideas for nightstands — some with just enough space for a book and lamp.

chest of drawers
As long as they don't match, almost any 2 side tablea can make great nightstands.
Why are good nightstands so hard to find? All I want for 2010 is a set of solid nightstands, secondhand preferably, with one drawer...
Alas, the search continues
JaneLane...i'm with you on that!!
that last picture made me make a face and a noise like i just smelled something terrible.
I live in a studio and have a bookshelf separating my bed from the rest of the living space. I use the back half of the bookshelf as my 'nightstand' and put my clock, glasses, water, etc. there.
Aside from apparently not having a good spot for my alarm clock (which could always go somewhere else anyhow, thus preventing the hit-snooze-10-times problem), that first picture is perfect. Light? Check. Book rest? Check. Glasses? Check. Places for cat to climb and knock things down to wake me up? No! Might have to try out something similar.
That shaggy pillow with the phone sitting on it is awesome. It's like a sleeping muppet.
I must be weird...
...I actually use a Nightstand as a Nightstand - and it has drawers to hide the junk!
I really like using the unexpected. The floating shelves are a great (and economical!) idea.
I'm in the market for nightstands for both our master and guest bedrooms, so have been looking a lot online recently. I'm not sure if I'm sold on the style of this one, but it has all the elements I'm looking for: open shelf at top and two drawers.

Just bought a mid century looking chest of drawers, it's perfect for my tiny space.
I use my Eileen Gray table on one side and a two high bookcase on the other. I love the bookcase its so functional I only have a tray that holds a few things and a few books on the shelf, my lamp and water sit on top. Right now I don't have any place for the Eileen Gray table so its actually being used for what it was designed for, the only issue is putting down a glass of water in the middle of the night on glass its a bit startling, I guess I could use coasters.
My friend just bought two mirrored small tables with drawers I love the look so glamourous especially when you mix brass lamps and have an upholstered headboard with brass nail heads next to the mirrored tables looks great.
Nightstands have always been a bit of a mystery to me. They seem so expensive for what you actually get.
I use Ikea's stainless steel Dacke kitchen carts ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10116991 ) for my nightstands. And everything I don't want to see goes in nice boxes on the shelves. A little modern industrial, the right height for my bed, and highly functional.
Anyone know who makes/where to get the clip lamp in the first picture? And is it cheaper than a Tolomeo clip lamp?
JaneLane, me too! The only ones I've ever really liked went for about $6,000 on e-bay.
Currently, I'm leaning toward the IKEA Hemnes (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90121234), which I don't love, but is more or less the right idea. I'm tired of not having a drawer!
I would love to know what that wall color is in the first photo. Or, if anyone has suggestions for what it could be...
Oh, I LOVE the idea of the ladder! I'm about to move into my first owned home and have a decorating budget I am hoping to squeeze some furniture out of... but I just can't find anything right! I have one that is ok (might need some paint) but something like a ladder or a floating shelf would be perfect by the other side.
I sleep alone (most of the time :P) and am happy with having on side for phone (which is my alarm) and lamp, and the otherside for book, etc. Or even if I go for a shelf, I certainly don't need two actual cupboards... I don't know why I didn't think of floating shelves before!
Thanks for this post! Some definite food for thought.
I have two Shaker nightstand tables (with a drawer in each) that I got at a second hand furniture store that specializes in hotel/motel furnishings. They ALWAYS have nightstands, many ugly, but mine are nice and were $30 each. Just saying...
I'm looking for hollywood regency (but not totally over the top) nightstands in New York scale (smallish) and I'm having the hardest time finding anything under $800. I'm thinking of having them custommade, because for $1600 I am pretty sure I can get whatever I want. Any hollywood regency suggestions for less (with at least one drawer) would be very very welcome.
i have an little drop front desk (kind of like this: http://www.designat639.com/Photos/drop-front-desk-and-chair.jpg) on one side, and a larkin desk (like this: http://www.furnitureplusrepair.com/.a/6a010534c74034970b011168fe43b0970c-320wi) on the other. both were really cheap and in rough shape, so i painted them white. i leave the desk part open most of the time, and i do use the first one as a desk or work table frequently.
My partner uses a table with mosaic top designed by a friend as his night stand. I don't use one. I keep my glasses on a nearby table, and only read in bed if he's not home. 99% of the time I use the bed only for sleeping (and related activities) -- but not for reading, web surfing, TV watching, etc. I don't have a night stand.
Space is really tight for me so I use a metal two drawer filing cabinet. It was free so I figured I could spend $10 to gussy it up & hide some of the dents. After sanding and a generous helping of Rustoleum's hammered finish bronze spraypaint I'm pretty pleased.
Jesikka - I am looking for something similar and I found some very nice ones on ebay and a few of these could be painted.
These were on the higher end side, but they are beauties-

Thanks for the suggestions. I've actually looked at all of those ebay finds, but I want something that still has somewhat modern lines. These are the high end ones that I like: Jonathan Adler's Channing End Table- http://www.jonathanadler.com/shop/home.php?cat=523, Room Service's Hollywood side table- http://www.roomservicestore.com/store/coffee_and_side_tables/hollywood_side_table_white_3_drawer.html, and these ebay guys: http://cgi.ebay.com/PAIR-1930s-FRENCH-ART-DECO-PARCHMENT-NIGHTSTANDS_W0QQitemZ350231896827QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAntiques_Furniture?hash=item518b72a2fb.
That probably gives you a better sense of what I like. Does anyone have any suggestions in that genre? I am getting a quote from room service to do something in my scale. Also, any recommendations for affordable nyc carpentry would be welcome as well.
Thanks!
Delaspada has the nicest high-end simple wooden one with drawer.

I am also looking for a nightstand for a greyscale bedroom, actually inspired by Paul Massey's house in Living Etc. ( bottom row middle pic is form that spread!), so I owuld love his barrel idea. Also want mismatched nightstands, my wife has a small black and gold chinese cabinet with drawer.
I have one of these on each side of the bed:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10093763
with this basket on the bottom shelve:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/77439212
We have a plant on the top (glass) shelve, and light/books/alarm clock on the middle shelve.
Sometimes I wonder if people actually stop to consider if they really need a nightstand or they just go ahead and get one because it's a design rule you mustn't break. A shelf over the bed would be a more space-optimising solution to somewhere-to-put-my-book and you can hang the lamp on the wall instead. In many AT house tours it seems that nightstands are primarily used for displaying a stack of fancy-schmancy books, a designer lamp and some verysuperübercool knick-knack. Maybe it's just my OCD with practicality but I'd rather keep display stuff in a room where no one sleeps so it doesn't get so dusty.
I love the creativity of some of those, especially the first one. The desk is my favorite though!
I've been on the hunt for a new nightstand for forever. I had an old end table of my mom's with some wooden crates stacked on top for shelving...and I hated it. So I was in my Dad's workshop a couple of weeks ago and found this old nightstand buried under sawdust- it's perfect! Two drawers, was dark brown but painted an off white. It's chipping pretty bad...but I'm going to redo it. Then this weekend I went to my grandparent's house and noticed that it's twin was in her spare bedroom! She said I could take it, bless her, and that the pieces had once been an old vanity that she cut apart a very long time ago. This one is still it's dark brown but I think I'm going to tackle redoing them both tomorrow.
It's so awesome to have something I love finally. So glad it isn't from a big box store- that it's from my Grandma. Makes it SO much cooler!
where are those white shelf-y things from in picture 3??
I have an old typing desk I found at Goodwill that I spray painted glossy red-- it's just big enough to hold my lamp and clock on the top shelf, and a stack of books on the bottom shelf.
I love the charcoal (garbage tin-like?!?) cylander. It might be good for storing extra blankets, out of season clothes... etc. Where is it from? Or any ideas if I could spray paint that color?
OH wow....the ladder is such a good idea for my situation! Our bed is at an angle in the room, so there's not much room for any table or anything, and I get claustrophobic-ey real easy, so any stand would feel too close to the bed. You can see here (http://moorethanfine.blogspot.com/2010/01/for-love-of-thrifting.html), in the first photo, how it is. I have a stand a little ways away, by the closet door. Hubby has a stand with drawers to hide the unmentionables, so I don't really need one myself. There are tons of great ideas here but I especially love the ladder one...although, I guess I don't know how it'd look in the room. Any tips?
I love the charcoal (garbage tin-like?!?) cylander too! Where can I get one?!
