In terms of selecting colors for interiors, gray is typically at the top of my list (second to white). I'm a sucker for a dramatic gray room and there's no reason why it can't be brought into the kitchen and more specifically to the cabinets.
Many people purchase homes with older kitchens and if replacing the cabinets isn't in the budget, paint usually is. First inclination is to paint cabinets white to make the space look larger but gray can actually have the same effect.
There are many different shades of gray to choose from, whether you're painting or picking our new cabinets for a kitchen remodel. You can go dark and dramatic with a deep gray, which looks beautiful with white walls and black countertops. Go super glam with a lighter shade of gray and install white marble countertops and chic brass hardware! Or, achieve the modern look by pairing dark gray cabinets with a plywood backsplash and black countertops. Add white dining chairs to brighten up the space!

I like all of these. I finally settled on Ikea's Akurum hi gloss gray cabinets, white subway tile backsplash and absolute black granite countertops. I'm still trying to decide whether to go with stainless or black appliances.
It's strange how many gray's there are.
oops, grays, not gray's
I love the hanging dish rack, where is that from?
Thanks
LOVE this. Did the same thing in my own apartment when we painted the kitchen cabinets - a dark, stormy gray to anchor the bottom cabinets to the ground, and bright white on the upper cabinets to keep the space light and open. Love it against my butcher-block countertop.
you can see images on my blog, http://anotherbrooklynblog.blogspot.com/
the color is best illustrated here: http://anotherbrooklynblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/remember-this-ahh-sorry-to-be-so-mia.html
Love me some gray! :)
wow. looks like plywood on the walls of picture no. 5. probably took a lot of sanding, but it's totally cool. And it works with that tone of gray.
Hooray for gray! Our kitchen has the same colour gray as the 'gray kitchen renovation'. We put Cole & Sons Fornasetti Malachite wallpaper to match on the kitchen wall.
Kristen, you must be a mind reader! I've been thinking about going gray for the kitchen cabinets (and living room walls) in my new house. By the way, do you know the color gray in the first pic?
@ studioren...
Something people often overlook in a kitchen reno is how simple it is to have appliances professionally painted. Many auto body shops will paint a fridge and stove for around the thousand dollar mark. Buy a white fridge and stove and you may be already saving a thousand or more over stainless.
Now if only there were a large bold color piece of artwork over the sink in that 1st photo before they decided it was "ready to photograph"...
I remember AT did a similar post on grey kitchens a while back and I used it as my inspiration for my gray/white kitchen. I mixed vintage with new (bertoia and ikea!!) and I am SO happy with the end result :-)
