Having moved many a heavy sofa (ugh vintage sleepers!) up and down stairs and in and out of apartments, the idea of lightweight — yet sturdy furniture is quite refreshing. Can you guess what this piece will turn out to be after a few quick folds?

Patrick Frey has designed a collection of extremely lightweight, yet super-sturdy furniture pieces that are being produced by Vial. Each piece is made from Varioline® and although the company (which creates their product by the same name) has been around for several decades, it just now being able to be recognized for the versatility they bring to the furniture industry.

The piece above transforms into the stool seen in the other pictures above. A foam core is added for stability and then the piece is folded on the scored lines to hold it's structure and shape.

Though they aren't something that looks particularly inviting for a long night of tv watching or book reading, they'd be perfect for other needs around the home, other than beautiful aesthetics.

Are you a fan? Or still waiting for the lightweight revolution to produce a piece that's more family friendly? Let us know below!
